In keeping with our mission of training the next generation of Latino leaders, USHLI's Student Leadership Series will offer leadership development training to student leaders from high schools and colleges in the Midwest Region at the Holiday Inn Mart Plaza Hotel on October 21 & 22, 2011, in Chicago, IL.
Students representing the states of Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, and Kentucky are expected to attend. Students will have the opportunity to network with their peers representing local and regional organizations and obtain very useful information pertaining to financial literacy, scholarships and internships, graduate school programs, and possible part-time and career employment opportunities. The event will start with a networking session and ice breaker for the students from 6:00-9:00pm on Friday evening.
Hon. Susana Mendoza, the first woman ever elected to the Office of City Clerk in Chicago, IL, will address the students during the Opening Breakfast at 9:00 am on Saturday, October 22nd. Before being elected City Clerk, Susana Mendoza proudly served six terms as a Democratic member of the Illinois House of Representatives from 2001 to 2011, representing the 1st District of Illinois. Clerk Mendoza has proven to be an aggressive leader in her efforts to improve education, public health, public safety and living conditions for the people of Illinois and the community she serves.

Gerson Martinez, a professional speaker, will deliver the luncheon keynote address sharing his personal experience of growing up in an immigrant household. Gerson inspires and encourages today's youth to give more of themselves in helping find solutions to issues within their community. Several high school "At Risk" students have participated in his mentoring program, and over 50% of the students who had previously been disinterested in attending college are now taking college prep courses, as a result of his program.

Lina Traslavina-Stover, Assistant Vice President & Research Officer, CoolSpeak, LLC, will engage students and close the program in a dynamic session on leadership development. Lina's passion for education and mentoring students has allowed her to work for several local and national organizations promoting Latino empowerment through higher education and community service, while helping them develop their potential and reach their goals.
A variety of workshops will be offered throughout the morning and afternoon. Students will have the opportunity to develop better leadership skills, share best practices, and learn more about making good choices in the course of their personal and professional growth, career advancement, and public or community service.
