USHLI Spotlights Keynote Speakers |
USHLI announces two more featured speakers scheduled to address our 28th national conference. On Thursday, addressing our Educational Achievement Luncheon will be Ambassador Carmen Lomellin. The Hon. Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico will address our Latino Officials Recognition Luncheon.
Governor Bill Richardson served in Congress for 15 years. While in Congress he served as a special envoy on many sensitive international missions and successfully won the release of hostages, American servicemen, and prisoners in North Korea, Iraq, and Cuba. In 1997, Richardson was nominated to be the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and, in 1998, was unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate as Secretary of Energy. In recognition of his concern for human rights abuses and his diplomatic work throughout the world, Richardson has been nominated five times for the Nobel Peace Prize. He is presently serving his second term as Governor of New Mexico.
The Governor will also receive our award for Excellence in Public Service, named in memory of two of the most influential Hispanics ever to serve in Congress, Edward R. Roybal and Henry B. Gonzalez.

Ambassador Carmen Lomellin was nominated by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate to be the Permanent Representative of the United States to the Organization of American States (OAS). The OAS is comprised of diplomats representing 23 nations in the Western Hemisphere.
In her previous position Amb. Lomellin served as the Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Commission of Women. She is a former appointee in the Clinton Administration, where she held the positions of White House Liaison for the U.S. Office of Personnel Management and Director of that agency's Office of International Affairs. Amb. Lomellin was an advisor on Hispanic affairs to the White House Office for Women's Initiatives and Outreach, as well as Search Manager in the White House Office of Presidential Personnel during the 1996 presidential transition, where she worked on sub-cabinet appointments in the area of international trade.
