Omaha Graduates 100 Leadership Program Participants
Ohama, NEStudents from the Omaha Public Schools and the University of Nebraska-Omaha completed USHLI's 10-week Grassroots Leadership Development Program (GLDP).   Through the program students learn about how city, county and school governments work.  Participants spend three weeks meeting with elected and appointed representatives of each governmental entity.  The 10th session, on financial literacy, will be completed at our national conference.  Officials educate participants on how government works and participants educate officials on how to better serve the community.
Participating in the program were students from Bellevue, Benson, Bryan, Burke, Central, Gross, North, Northwest and South high schools and UNO.  Leading the 46 elected and appointed officials participating in the program were Mayor Jim Suttle, County Chief Administrative Officer Kathleen Kelley, and OPS Superintendent Dr. John Mackiel.

Groups interested in having a GLDP in their community should contact Ricardo Lopez at (312) 427-8683 or rlopez@ushli.org.  The program can be organized and conducted at no cost to participants.
USHLI Partners with Telemundo's Hazte Contar Campaign
hazte contarUSHLI is partnering with Telemundo's Hazte Contar campaign in promoting a complete and accurate count in the 2010 Census.  Working with local and state officials and community leaders to ensure a successful Census is USHLI's #1 priority for 2010.

USHLI will work with state commissions that comprise the U.S. Council on Hispanic Affairs and student organizations that have joined SALSA (Strategic Alliance for Latino Student Action) in a door-to-door canvassing campaign to make sure families respond to the Census.

Student organizations and community based organizations interested in participating in this campaign should contact Ricardo Lopez at (312) 427-8683 or rlopez@ushli.org.
USHLI Plans Alumni Reunion

USHLI Logo and HeaderFormer USHLI staff, interns, scholarship recipients, and conference participants are being invited to a special reception and meeting during its 28th annual national conference, which will be held February 17-20, 2010, at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers.

The gathering will mark the first annual reunion and serve to locate hundreds of former alumni whose personal and/or professional growth has been impacted by their involvement with USHLI.  The reunion will also serve to organize the first group of contributing writers whose stories will be compiled into an annual publication profiling USHLI alumni and the impact their service is having on society today.
