Latino Youth Could Decide the Nation's
Future
Over half of all Latino votes cast in the 2008 presidential
primaries came from Latino youth, and the Latino youth vote could prove
decisive in the November 4 General Election. Our 2008 Northeast Latino Student
Leadership Conference (NLSLC) will celebrate the importance of the Latino youth
vote, offer leadership skills development workshops, and showcase exhibitors
interested in recruiting Latino youth for scholarships, internships, and
employment opportunities.
Representatives of the campaigns of Barack Obama and John McCain
are expected to address the NLSLC on October 11 in Newark. Participants will be
urged to make a strong push in the remaining weeks before the November 4
General Election to use cell phones, text messaging and email to help
get-out-the-vote.
Mr. Frank D. Gomez, an
accomplished visionary, innovator, and co-founder of some of the nation's
leading Latino organizations, and a strong proponent of expanding Latino access
to educational opportunities, better schools, greater academic achievement, and
an avid advocate for positive cultural self-identity, will be our keynote
speaker. Download his bio here.
Dr. Juan Andrade,
the only Latino leader in the nation to have been honored by the President of
the United States
for promoting civic education and leadership development, will conduct a
PowerPoint presentation on Latino demographics.
Mr. Andres Lara,
a.k.a. the Cuban guy, has been recognized for his amazing talent and unique
ability to use humor, large group learning exercises, comedy, and high-energy
presentation skills in connecting with Latino youth, will be our closing
speaker.
In addition, leading Latino experts in leadership skills
development, gaining acceptance into graduate school, community involvement, financial
literacy, public policy issues impacting Latino youth, and other relevant
topics, will conduct highly interactive workshops.
