Central States SALSA members,

You still have the opportunity to be part of the Latino Youth Empower Campaign! If you have not done so already, you can do this by including SALSA in the agenda of your summer e-board meetings. From all indications the November 4, 2008 Presidential Election will be historic regardless of the outcome, and the level of Latino youth participation should be no less historic.  Latino student leaders must strategically align the values of their campus organizations to plan the best strategy to ensure that we are part of whatever change occurs in 2008.

To this end, USHLI will provide a student organization or a coalition of student organizations the materials needed to organize and conduct voter registration, voter education, and Get Out-The-Vote campaigns at their campus. Participating organizations will earn credit points to be used toward registration fee waivers for students attending our Central-States Hispanic Student Leadership Conference or national conference.

Student leaders can also participate in the Collegiate Leadership Development Program (CLDP). Students are urged to recommend to the membership of their respective organizations that a CLDP be scheduled and held before December 31, 2008.

I would also like to remind you that the Central-States Hispanic Student Leadership Conference (CSHSLC) will take place at the Hilton President Kansas City, during October 24-25, 2008. This year's conference is expected to bring over 400 student leaders from Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. We will feature a forum on the changing Latino demographics and Mr. Carlos Ojeda Jr. will be our featured speaker for the luncheon.
