Midwest SALSA members,
If you were not able to attend our last SALSA meetings
in June, you still have the opportunity to be part of the Latino Youth
Empowerment Campaign! If you are having meetings with your e-board during the
summer, think about including SALSA in your agenda. From all indications the
November 4, 2008 Presidential Election will be historic regardless of the
outcome, and the level of Latino youth participation should be no less historic. Latino student leaders must strategically align the values of their campus
organizations to plan the best strategy to ensure that we are part of whatever change occurs in 2008.
USHLI will provide a student organization or a
coalition of student organizations the materials needed to organize and conduct
voter registration, voter education, and Get-Out-The-Vote campaigns at each
campus. Participating organizations will earn
credit points to be used toward registration fee waivers for students attending
our Midwest Hispanic Student Leadership
Conference or national conference.
As a second part of SALSA, student leaders can also
participate in the Collegiate Leadership Development Program (CLDP). Students
are urged to recommend to the membership of their respective organizations that
a CLDP be scheduled and held before December 31, 2008.
I would also like to remind you that the Midwest Hispanic Student Leadership Conference
will take place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, September
27, 2008 from 9:00am-5:00pm. Last year's conference was a
success, bringing over 400 student leaders from Illinois,
Indiana, Ohio,
Michigan, and Wisconsin. This year we will feature a forum
on the changing Latino demographics and Dr. Lorena Gonzalez will be our
featured speaker for the luncheon. You can register today at: http://ushli.org/events/midwest/registration.html
