"African Americans and Latinos: Opportunities for Building Electoral Coalitions" was the focus of the briefing held by the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) on April 9, 2008 in Washington, D.C. Over 70 individuals including congressional staff and representatives of national organizations and labor unions, attended the briefing which was conducted by a panel of experts including: Dr. Juan Andrade, President of USHLI, Dr. Ron Walters, Executive Director of the African American Leadership Center, Mr. Jorge Mursuli, President of Democracia USA, and Ms. Melanie Campbell, Executive Director and CEO of the National Coalition of Black Civic Participation. The briefing was sponsored by Southwest Airlines. |

The Almanac of Latino Politics, 5th edition |
The Almanac of Latino Politics was released, also on April 9, at a press conference in Washington DC. The 2008 issue of the Almanac provides a historical context for analyzing Latino population growth, the Latino vote, Latino political behavior in presidential and non-presidential elections, and the impact of immigration on the Latino vote. The Almanac also surveys the political landscape in which Latinos and African Americans can create electoral coalitions at all levels of government. Publication of the Almanac of Latino Politics was co-sponsored by the National Education Association, Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers International Union, Service Employees International Union, and AARP.
