26th Annual National Hispanic Leadership Conference

Over 6,000 past, present and future leaders representing 40 states attended our 26th annual national conference. The event marked another great success for the Hispanic community. The conference, held February 13-17 in Chicago, focused on promoting unity, education, leadership development, and cultivating the next generation of Latino leaders.

The conference program included interactive workshops on skills development, forums on social, cultural and political issues, an exhibit show, and a leadership rally and college recruitment fair for high school students. The program also included our first Health and Citizenship Fair in which USHLI partnered with NALEO, ICCRR, The New Americans Alliance, PhRMA, and the Cook County Bureau of Health Services.

Our featured speakers included: U.S. Senator Richard J. Durbin (IL), ACLU National President and General Counsel Anthony Romero, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the Sr. Vice President of the Educational Testing Service Ms. Yvette Donado, Dr. Samuel Betances, and Lt. Col. Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch (Ret.).

Our honorees included:
  • Mr. Raul Yzaguirre - National Hispanic Hero Award
  • Hon. Federico Pena - Edward R. Roybal-HenryB. Gonzalez Award for Excellence in Public Service
  • Dr. Ana (Cha) Guzman - Cesar E. Chavez Community Service Award
  • Dr. Joe Bernal - Henry L. (Hank) Lacayo Lifetime Achievement Award
  • Ms. Martha E. Villegas - William C. (Willie) Velasquez Volunteer of the Year Award

The Dr. Juan Andrade Scholarship for Young Hispanic Leaders was presented to 30 students representing 24 colleges and universities in seven (7) states. To date, USHLI has awarded $281,500 in scholarships to 280 students from throughout the nation.

Almanac of Latino Politics, 5th edition
Get your copy today! The 2008 issue of The Almanac of Latino Politics was released Wednesday, February 13, during the opening day of our 26th annual conference. Former HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros characterizes the Almanac as "the roadmap to empowerment." Gov. Bill Richardson refers to the Almanac as the "Bible of Latino Politics." And Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa says, "The Almanac moves the fulfillment of destiny beyond just a hope and a dream, but rather places it squarely on the road of challenges, opportunities and expectations."

21st Century Leaders Summer Internship Applications Now Being Accepted
A 10-week paid internship, the program provides college students an opportunity to observe and participate in the dynamics of social change by working with leaders and elected officials in their community, registering voters, and attending public policy seminars presented by local, county, state and federal officials. Applications must be received April 25.

A training workshop will be offered May 16-18 in Chicago for the 1st internship cycle, which begins May 19 and concludes July 28. A second training workshop will be offered June 6-7, also in Chicago, for the 2nd internship cycle, which will begin June 9 and conclude August 28. All participants are required to attend one of the two training workshops.
