Global Gala is the annual end-of-the-year celebration
of international friendship at the University of
Washington. Organized by the FIUTS Student Board,
Gala is not your traditional dance party! This year's
theme was "Hasta Mañana" and everything from the
food to the decor to the music reflected the many
cultures of Mexico!
More than 150 students attended Global Gala this
year to enjoy a performance by Mariachi Quinto Sol
and the voice of Lupe Rios, dancing to tunes with DJ
Rhythma, and delicious mexican treats and tres
leches cupcakes! The event was a true celebration of
the year and a wonderful way for students to say
goodbye to the FIUTS community.
A special thanks to The
University of Washington Alumni Association, Student
Activities and Union Facilties, and the UW
Graduate and Professional Student Senate for
their support of the event.

Each year at Global Gala, FIUTS presents two awards
to students who exemplify FIUTS' mission to connect
students to local and global communities and
promote cross-cultural dialogue and understanding.
The Jim Davis Award is presented each year to a
domestic student. This year's award was
presented to Bridget Swirski, a longtime FIUTS
Facilitator. The Elizabeth Gould Award is presented
each year to an international student. This year's
award was presented to outgoing
Student
Board President Lissy Rabusseau.
Congratulations Bridget and Lissy!

China, Turkey, Italy and many other countries
are making their plans to head to Seattle for
the fall. Help us welcome them by
participating in
the FIUTS Homestay Program!
The FIUTS
Homestay lasts between three
and ten days while students go through
orientation and look for a place to live, or
wait for the residence halls to open on campus.
Most students will need a homestay
between the weeks of August 16 - 23 and
September 13 - 26.
For questions, or to update your information
for this year, contact Homestay & Community
Relations

More than one year after the devastating earthquake in
Sichuan, China, FIUTS continues to work with the
students from China
Earthquake Aid and other organizations to support
relief and recovery efforts in the area. In the months
following the tragic event, FIUTS helped to raise
almost $65,000 for earthquake relief efforts.
Two distributions of funds were made soon after the
earthquake - one to immediate relief supplies, and the
other to provide more than 4,000 schoolchildren with
backpacks and school supplies in the Fall.
This week, FIUTS distributed the last of the funds to a
reconstruction project that will provide sanitation
education and eco-toilets in the Wolong Nature
reserve, home to more than 150 highly endangered
giant pandas. The site will improve public health in the
area by reducing the spread of water-borne illness
and become a demonstration area used to teach
sanitation technology to the surrounding villages as
well as to the more than 100,000 visitors to the park
each year.
FIUTS is proud to play a role in this important
program - thanks to the many members of our
community that came together to help at such a tragic
time.
