Happy New Year!

After an incredible 2008, FIUTS is looking forward to another amazing year in 2009!

Over the next several months, the FIUTS Board of Trustees and Student Board will be focusing on a new Strategic Plan - so now is the perfect time to share any feedback about FIUTS' programs or ideas for the future. Just send them to me at era@fiuts.org.

It's also a great time to reach out to an international student. From short term hosting to Take the World to Work Week to the FIUTS Winter Potluck - there are plenty of opportunities to meet someone new and learn about a new part of the world.

If you are a student, check out the Presidential Inauguration Breakfast on January 20. It's a chance to witness this historic moment, learn more about the U.S. political process, and help others understand what it's like in your country. If you want an inside look at your future career of choice, be sure to sign up for Take the World to Work Week, too!

From all of us at FIUTS, Happy New Year - and best of luck in 2009!

FIUTS Executive Director

jim davis
FIUTS' first Executive Director, James McCoy Davis, Jr. died of complications from Parkinson's disease Oct. 10 at a nursing home in La Jolla, CA. He was 93.

James came to FIUTS as Executive Director just 10 days after our original articles of incorporation were filed - on September 1st, 1948. Over the next six years, he worked with the founding Board of Trustees, called "The Committee of Ten," to formulate the mission and vision for FIUTS and lay the groundwork for generations to come.

Jim's Graduate thesis, entitiled, "A University- Sponsored Community Program of International Understanding Through Students," was submitted to Columbia University in 1953. His thesis records the founding of FIUTS and details his experience during the formation of FIUTS programs, and continues to serve as a valuable source of information and inspiration to FIUTS leadership today.

Jim went on to a long career suporting and inspiring international students and served as President of the San Diego World Affairs Council. He will be remembered for his passion for cross-cultural understanding, his curiosity about the world, and for his contributions to FIUTS and to international students across the globe.

The Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition (GSEC) invites students from around the world-and across fields of study-to find creative, unorthodox solutions to problems of poverty in the developing world. As a leading-edge initiative at the University of Washington, GSEC seeks to engage creative minds around the world and across disciplines to encourage bolder and less conventional business solutions to global poverty.

Each year the Global Business Center (GBC) invites a select group of teams to GSEC Week at the University of Washington Michael G. Foster School of Business. This year, they are teaming up with FIUTS to offer these students a unique perspective on the Pacific Northwest by participating in a FIUTS Homestay!

Students will be placed in local homes as teams for the nights of February 22 - 27 (teams are generally made up of 2 - 3 students). Please email Alicia van der Veen if you are interested in hosting some of these remarkable young entrepreneurs!
potluck spring 08
Don't miss the FIUTS Winter Community Potluck!

A potluck is a gathering of people where each person brings a dish of food to be shared among the group.

Every FIUTS potluck is a wonderful way to meet FIUTS students, host families, and other community members, and to enjoy fabulous food from around the world! Everyone is invited!

The potluck will be held on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at 6 pm, at the UW Waterfront Activities Center (WAC).

The WAC is located directly behind Husky Stadium on Union Bay and the Montlake Cut. Parking is available in lot E12. PLEASE NOTE: To park, enter through Gate 8 and say you are there for the FIUTS Potluck. Be aware there may be several other UW events using the lot that evening, so be sure to follow these parking instructions carefully!
FIUTS always receives many beautiful greeting cards from alumni and friends across the globe, and many of them include messages and updates.

Pentti and Brigitta Uuspää sent greetings from Finland and memories of their host families Carol and Vernel Aitken (1969) and Bob and Betty Brustad (1971).

They fondly remember the FIUTS office, then in the Communications Building, and participating in Orientation Camp, a trip to Eastern Washington, and the International Show at the Seattle Center.

FIUTS welcomed approximately 100 new students to the UW community this week with social events, presentations, and activities geared towards helping them adjust to Seattle and make new friends before classes begin.

On Saturday, January 3, new students split into teams to compete in a scavenger hunt for items and information collected throughout the University District and Fremont, then the groups enjoyed ice skating at the Seattle Center.

Stephen E. Hanson, Herbert J. Ellison Professor of Political Science, started this week in his new position of Vice Provost of The UW Office of Global Affairs.

The Office of Global Affairs (OGA) is tasked with bringing leadership, strategic coordination, and innovation to the global dimension of the UW's mission. The OGA has worked closely with FIUTS on many programs, and all of us look forward to working with Stephen.

SOCIETY, EQUALITY AND CHANGE STUDY TRIP
May 15-26, 2009

"A wonderful immersion into place, culture, and history."
- 2008 Study Trip Participant

This Bahia Street Study Trip explores race, class, poverty and society in Bahia, Brazil. It allows participants to go "inside Bahia" and experience Salvador through the eyes of its African-Brazilian majority. Led by Bahia Street co- founder Rita Conceição, the trip provides extensive opportunities for conversations about poverty, race, class, and collaborative ways to work for change across cultures. The trip is designed to be educational and fun.

Proceeds support the Bahia Street, a Salvador- and Seattle-based non-profit that breaks cycles of poverty through quality education for impoverished girls. Cost is $1,800 double occupancy (not including air). For more information, visit www.bahiastreet.org , email program director Nancy Bacon or call (206)633-1724.

At the intersection of the University of Washington and the community, FIUTS inspires lifelong engagement in experiences that build global understanding.
