"...the University, in cooperation with citizens of the community, is launching an extensive program for students from abroad. It is bringing to the campus a full-time Advisor to Foreign Students in the person of Mr. James Davis of New York City, who will give much of his time to the promotion of a Foundation for International Understanding Through Students which is now being incorporated"

- Exerpted from the personal correspondence of Raymond B. Allen, University of Washington President, August 4, 1948.

August is FIUTS' anniversary month, and as we prepare to celebrate in just a few months, it is incredible to think about the hundreds of dedicated individuals who were a part of FIUTS' founding story and all of the people who have helped to form the core of our mission and activities over the past sixty years.

The history of FIUTS began around 1940 when a group of YMCA Student Cabinet members took over operation of the Japanese Student House, abandoned when the Japanese students were evacuated at the start of World War II. The group wanted to cultivate better relations between the people of Washington and visitors from abroad, in order to prevent future conflicts. These first efforts led to parnerships with the local Rotary and other groups and success in placing students in local homestay lessened the need for housing. The house was sold and the funds were used towards the founding and initial programs of FIUTS.

Over the next 60 years, FIUTS programs have evolved and developed, but the mission remains clear: to inspire lifelong engagement in experiences that build global understanding.

I know our founders would be proud.

Joan
Joan Newman Campbell
Aug. 21, 1926 - July 22, 2008

Joan Campbell, FIUTS Office Manager from 1977- 1992, was the face of FIUTS for more than fifteen years. During her time at FIUTS, she worked with six Executive Directors and two Acting Directors in two different offices. Joan befriended thousands of students, attended countless weddings and other celebrations, and created the FIUTS Alumni News, which she continued to publish from her home for years after her retirement.

Former FIUTS Executive Director Kirby Brown worked with Joan during her final years at FIUTS, and says Joan was, "...the main point of connection to FIUTS for many alumni."

A memorial service for Joan will be held at Des Moines United Methodist Church, 22225 9th Ave South, Des Moines, Washington, on Saturday, August 9th, at 1:30 p.m.
This year, FIUTS welcomes a large slate of new members to our Board of Trustees and Student Board. The Board of Trustees and Student Board work closely with staff to create policy, direct planning, and design programs to support our mission.

Great Wall
More than 200 Chinese students and scholars will come to the University of Washington this fall. With the Beijing Olympics around the corner, what better way to learn about this fascinating country than to make a new friend from China!

FIUTS hosts welcome new UW international students into their homes for their first week in Seattle, and forms bonds of friendship and goodwill that last a lifetime. Hosts range from couples with children to retired people to singles and recent graduates - representing the diversity and vitality of the our community.

Hosting a new international student is a wonderful way to learn firsthand about the rest of the world, help a new student adjust to the U.S. and make a new friend. Many host families remain in contact with their students long after the homestay is over!
