As you prepare for your experience in Seattle, I am sure you are curious about this new city you'll soon call home. In this email I will provide some helpful resources about the US and Seattle that you can refer to as you prepare to leave home, allowing you to focus on your real goal: making new friends, furthering your education, and having a great experience.

This email contains information about a variety of topics, including food, shopping, entertainment and recreation in Seattle.

You should have received an email last week about Seattle transportation options. Didn't receive it, or need to look it over again? (Click here to read previous e-mails.) .

Groceries
A "Grocery Store" is a business that sells food items. If you are living on campus, and purchase a meal plan, you may not frequent a grocery store, but if you live off campus, you will need to go regularly!

A bit about shopping for food in America. If you are at the store don't be supervised to see a patron going by with a shopping cart full to the top, as many people shop only once a week buying enough food for many days. This is called "stocking up".

What about choices? There are endless options when it comes to any particular item. Companies are competing for your dollar by wrapping their products in attractive packaging to set them apart from their competition. When you step down the aisle to buy a bottle of water prepare yourself, there is not just one brand, but many.

Groceries stores can be part of a chain of stores or privately owned, they can be co-ops, specialty, or organic.
There are many grocery stores located near the campus or within a short bus ride.
Safeway is an inexpensive chain store that carries a wide variety of items but has a limited selection of organic and specialty foods.
Quality Food Centers or QFC is slightly more expensive but has an expansive selection of these items.
Trader Joe's is a small chain of specialty food stores that carry many interesting items along with regular and organic foods.
Whole Foods is a high-end, natural foods specialty store with an extensive selection of organic and natural groceries, along with home and health items.

If you are living on-campus and have chosen to purchase a meal plan, there are many eateries where you can find good food. They offer a variety of options, from healthy to indulgent. Many have convenient hours, and remain open from early in the morning until late at night, accommodating the student life style.
Some on-campus eateries:
Eleven 01 Cafe and Lounge
Husky Den
by George
McMahon 8
The Rotunda

And of course, there are plenty of options for eating out near the University of Washington campus. University Way (called the "Ave") has many inexpensive restaurants ranging from hot dogs to Thai food, so there's always an option nearby if you are looking for a taste of something different! You will have a chance to go on a guided tour of the Ave after the Opening Day ceremony.

Shopping
Most students need to buy the basics: hair dryer, sheets, a lamp, cups and dishes, school supplies, a phone card - all the essentials for student life. The University of Washington is just a short walk or bus ride away from many commercial shopping areas.

Downtown Seattle has several large shopping malls and is the home of the Pike Place Market, a large public market. As a part of your FIUTS orientation, you can choose to go on a guided tour of downtown Seattle. The FIUTS downtown Seattle tour is scheduled for September 12th. The tour will be led by current UW student who are known as the Orientation Facilitators.University Village is within walking distance of the UW and features many large chain stores. Northgate Mall is located just north of the UW. Additional retailers are located around the mall including Target, Ross and Best Buy.
Seattle is well known for nature and outdoor recreation activities, and it's a large city with plenty of interesting places to visit. When not occupied with studies, students have practically endless options when it comes time to choose what to do for fun.

If you don't want to go alone, FIUTS offers plenty of opportunities to visit local landmarks through our monthly Events and Activities. During Fall Orientation we will offer a variety of social activities including:
Rotary Boat Cruise on Elliot Bay, American Style Barbecue (BBQ), Overnight Camp, Mini World Cup Tournament and Tour of the Seattle Space Needle.

Seattle is a great city for outdoor activities. Check out these highly recomended spots:
Burke Gillman Trail, Greenlake, Canoeing at the Water Front Activities Center (WAC), taking a ferry ride and Alki Beach.

As you may have heard, from time to time, yes, Seattle is know to get rain. Here are some favorite in- door options for those less than sunny days: Seattle Art Museum , Bur ke Museum, Seattle Public Library, UW's Intramural Activities Building (IMA) and the Seattle Aquarium.
Newspaper
There are a number of newspapers distributed daily and weekly that provide great information and news about Seattle, the nation and the world. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer and The Seattle Times are printed daily and can be purchased in any major grocery store, local market, or from a street vending machine, as well as on campus.
The Stranger and the Seattle Weekly are free publications distributed weekly and can be obtained at most coffee shops, markets, street vending machines and on-campus. These two publications are excellent resources for city entertainment options and classified ads.
The UW has a free daily publication called the Daily that can be read on-line or found in front of most campus buildings. This paper focuses on issues that are relevant to the UW and the student population and includes classified listings for jobs and housing.

I hope you take some time to visit these resources and that they help you get acquainted with the University of Washington campus and Seattle.

Sincerely,

India Fitting
