The Work of Peace

May is the end of the "FIUTS year". Students are preparing for their final exams and many international students will soon graduate or return to their home countries. FIUTS staff and volunteers are busy planning for fall quarter International Student Orientation and getting ready for the 60th Anniversary events coming up in November.

As we look back on another year, it is difficult to measure the true effect of our work. Will one of this year's students go on to become a world leader and foster dialogue between nations? Will a friendship made this year change a career or life path and inspire others?

The Poet William Stafford wrote a beautiful poem about the absence of war, that reminds me of the silent power of programs like FIUTS, inspiring peace by building bonds between people from around the world.

This is the field where the battle did not happen,
where the unknown soldier did not die.
This is the field where grass joined hands,
where no monument stands,
and the only heroic thing is the sky.

Birds fly here without any sound,
unfolding their wings across the open.
No people killed - or were killed - on this ground
hollowed by the neglect of an air so tame
that people celebrate it by forgetting its name.

With a little more than one month to go, FIUTS Annual Campaign has almost reached the halfway point! Make your gift now to the FIUTS 2008 Annual Campaign and help us reach our goal of $30,000!

FIUTS inspires individuals to share thier culture, learn from others, and build bonds of friendship that cross international boundaries. Giving to FIUTS is a meaningful way to show your commitment to promoting peace and international understanding in our community.

FIUTS is a 501c3 community nonprofit organization that was founded on the University of Washington campus in 1948. Our mission is to inspire lifelong engagement in experiences that build global understanding.

Korean Childrens Day Pic
FIUTS enjoys partnerships with many community organizations, and our staff and students have been very active in local community groups and events that build cross-cultural friendship and understanding, and provide a great opportunity to talk with community groups about FIUTS programs, too!

This weekend, fifteen FIUTS students volunteered at Korean Focus NW Children's Day at Beaver Lake Park in Issaquah. Students organized Korean crafts and games such as gong-ee, tuho and nol-ttwigi to play with the children, many of whom are adopted from Korea. Korean Focus NW Chair Lauren Soliday is a FIUTS host, along with many other members of the Korean Focus NW community.

The event was a wonderful opportunity for interaction and cross-cultural exchange between FIUTS students, local families and children. Korean Focus NW provides support for families with children of Korean heritage - through social activities, educational programs, and cultural celebrations.

Over the past few weeks, FIUTS has also partnered with Seattle Arts and Lectures, the Seattle Cherry Blossom & Japanese Cultural Festival, and the National Peace Corps Association to promote FIUTS programs.

anniversary cake
The closing event of the FIUTS 60th Anniversary Celebration will be a dinner at Ocean City Restaurant in the International District. The dinner is scheduled for Saturday, November 8, and will include a silent auction of gift certificates from local businesses and treasures from around the world. Click here to see a preview of auction items.

Will you be attending the Anniversary events from your country or returning home for a visit before November? Consider joining other alumni from your country to donate a special item for the auction. Making a country gift to FIUTS is a special way to show your support for FIUTS and to share a beautiful item from your home country with the FIUTS community.

All auction proceeds will benefit FIUTS as we launch our seventh decade of work to promote international understanding.

host family
FIUTS has already begun receiving applications from students for the fall homestay program.

More than 1000 new UW international students will arrive in the fall, and many of them would love to spend their first week in Seattle with a host family. Be a part of this program promoting international friendship and cultural understanding!

Please email Alicia van der Veen with your availability for fall hosting.
This year, FIUTS will run an activity table at the Seattle International Children's Festival, which runs from May 12 - 17 at Seattle Center.

At the FIUTS table, volunteers will help children make and decorate kites. This is a great opportunity to meet local children and promote FIUTS homestay and education outreach programs in the community!

We are looking for volunteers who are available for two-hours shifts between 9:30 am - 2:30 pm from Monday, May 12 through Thursday, May 15. If you are available during the day, please email Alicia van der Veen to sign up!

TOPS Visit
On April 9th, 33 UW students from 20 countries spent an afternoon at TOPS Elementary School as part of FIUTS Education Outreach Programs. Nearly 300 TOPS students, grades 1-5 had the chance to sing songs from Singapore, eat crepes from France, learn words in Arabic, and much more. See more photos from FIUTS' visit to TOPS Elementary school.

Daniel Ngyuen, an undergraduate exchange student from Australia and participant in the TOPS program, said of the experience: "We taught the students Australian slang and they were amused by the meanings behind these very colloquial terms. . .[I learned] that all children, regardless of where they are from, are naturally curious and engaged by other cultures. . . It was a fantastic and memorable experience."
Stockholm Globie
Tim Lee, Maria Guldbrandsson, Clara Good, Emily Williams, Johanna Meidell and Alex Jones had a reunion in Stockholm on April 17.

Former Student Board members Adi Salehuddin and Kunihiko (Koko) Kosuge visited Seattle from Colorado and Japan, respectively, in early May.
