Compassion

According to Wikipedia, "Compassion is an emotion that is a sense of shared suffering, most often combined with a desire to alleviate or reduce the suffering of another."

The Dalai Lama's upcoming visit to Seattle for Seeds of Compassion will inspire tens of thousands of people to come together to explore ways to build compassion in children, families, and communities. A group of more than 150 FIUTS students representing 30 countries will attend Seeds of Compassion, and have an opportunity to dialog and reflect on the event and explore the role of compassion in their own lives and communities.

Seeds of Compassion will be an extraordinary opportunity for individuals who care about building compassion to learn about FIUTS, and for our students to share a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Being a part of the FIUTS community, whether as a host family, an international student, a volunteer, or a supporter of our programs, is a powerful way to play a role in creating a more peaceful, compassionate world.

FIUTS will have a table at this year's Cherry Blossom Festival to promote FIUTS and recruit potential host families. Consider joining us as a volunteer to tell others about your experience as a FIUTS host, student, or community member!

The Seattle Cherry Blossom and Japanese Cultural Festival at Seattle Center celebrates Seattle's deep connections with Japan and the beauty of spring. The festival features taiko drumming, food and tea ceremonies and commemorates Japan's gift of 1,000 blossoming cherry trees to Seattle in 1976.

The festival takes place Apr. 18 - 20 at the Seattle Center Fisher Pavilion. FIUTS will be there Saturday April 19 and Sunday April 20. Please contact Alicia van der Veen if you are interested in signing up for a shift.

When FIUTS Homestay and Community Outreach Coordinator Alicia van der Veen agreed to attend a friend's wedding in South Africa last month, she reached out to FIUTS alumni living in South Africa and arranged to meet with them during her visit.

In Cape Town, she met with Johann Lutjeharms, who earned his PhD from the UW in Oceanography in the 1970s. He is now a Professor at the University of Cape Town and gave Alicia a tour of campus.

In Johannesburg Alicia met up with Tracey Bourne, who came to UW on an MBA exchange in 2004.

Thanks to both alumni for showing Alicia such a great time and sharing their FIUTS stories!

According to a recent Seattle Times article, Universities in Washington state have seen a dramatic increase this year in applications from international students.

Applications from abroad are up 40 percent to join next fall's UW freshman class, and at WSU foreign student applications have increased 32 percent.

At the intersection of the University of Washington and the community, FIUTS inspires lifelong engagement through activities that build global understanding.
