FIUTS will have a table at this year's Cherry Blossom
Festival to promote FIUTS and recruit
potential host families. Consider joining us as a
volunteer to tell others about your experience as a
FIUTS host, student, or community member!
The Seattle Cherry Blossom and Japanese Cultural Festival at Seattle Center celebrates Seattle's deep connections with Japan and the beauty of spring. The festival features taiko drumming, food and tea ceremonies and commemorates Japan's gift of 1,000 blossoming cherry trees to Seattle in 1976. The festival takes place Apr. 18 - 20 at the Seattle
Center Fisher Pavilion. FIUTS will be there Saturday
April 19 and Sunday April 20. Please contact Alicia van der Veen
if you are interested in signing up for a shift.

When FIUTS Homestay and Community Outreach
Coordinator Alicia van der Veen agreed to
attend a
friend's wedding in South Africa last month, she
reached out to FIUTS alumni living in South
Africa and
arranged to meet with them during her visit.
In Cape Town, she met with Johann Lutjeharms,
who earned his PhD from the UW in Oceanography
in the 1970s. He is now a Professor at the
University of Cape Town and gave Alicia a
tour of campus.

In Johannesburg Alicia met up with Tracey
Bourne, who came to UW on an MBA exchange in
2004.
Thanks to both alumni for showing Alicia such
