The U.S. Center for Citizen Diplomacy recognized six citizen diplomats last month for their work promoting cultural understanding. The honorees were nominated for their work around the world to promote international cooperation and develop peaceful relations between people of the United States and other countries.

But you don't have to travel the world to be a citizen diplomat. In fact, FIUTS was founded on the belief that diplomacy begins in your own neighborhood, and spreads from person to person across the globe.

FIUTS creates opportunities for everyone in our community to serve as citizen diplomats - to build personal relationships with people from other countries, to engage in dialog and share responsibility for the world's problems, and to show genuine understanding and respect for people despite cultural differences.

The FIUTS community is a community of global citizens. When we approach a new international student with a warm welcome and a place to stay; when we share food, conversation, and experiences with others; when we connect an international student with a local child; when we talk with a study abroad student about the rewards and challenges of their experience; we are engaging in citizen diplomacy and planting seeds of peace and understanding.

Plans for the FIUTS 60th Anniversary Celebration are well underway! The 60th will be a wonderful time to connect (or reconnect!) to FIUTS and the University of Washington. Anniversary events are being scheduled for November 5-8, and include a welcome reception at MOHAI, a special Wednesday Lunch, and a Dinner and Silent Auction in Seattle's International District. Click here to read more about the Anniversary schedule.

Co- Chairs Nancy Bacon and Katie Testin have been hard at work contacting alumni and past supporters. Two 60th Anniversary Committees have been formed to support the event, representing former students, staff, and board members, and others tied to FIUTS and to international understanding and exchange.

Globie, the official mascot of the 60th, has been travelling the world, spreading goodwill and building excitement for the anniversary. FIUTS has a Flickr site devoted to photos of Globie's travels around the world. See where Globie has traveled on the Flickr FIUTS Group or learn to upload your Globie photos to Flickr. Globie is also on Facebook - so be sure to add Globie to your list of Facebook Friends!

In an article yesterday in the COMOPS Journal , author Miriam Sobre-Denton explored the connection between the lonliness and identity confusion that is a natural part of intercultural adjustment and participation in radical groups. The Consortium for Strategic Communication (CSC) is an initiative of the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at Arizona State University.

In the article, Miriam suggests that people who are experiencing culture shock might be more suggestible to radical ideas if they are presented by someone from a similar cultural background, simply due to feelings of cultural isolation and lonliness.

As a solution, she suggests that "...creating international, multi-ethnic, multicultural third cultures at sites of intercultural contact can ease the growing pains of culture shock while creating cultures of tolerance for diversity, rather than relegating international students to enclaves of similar cultural backgrounds."
