Building Peace

Happy New Year from FIUTS! It's 2008 - FIUTS' 60th anniversary year. The anniversary is a wonderful occasion to celebrate our incredible history. Our founders' vision was to promote international understanding by extending hospitality and other community connections to international students. They wanted to help prevent the occasion of future world wars by creating fruitful dialogue between the people of the world.

We've enjoyed some amazing successes in the past fifty-nine years, but as we read in the newspaper every day, the work of FIUTS is ongoing. I strongly believe that connections made through FIUTS can help to make the world a more peaceful place by inspiring our students to seek out opportunities to share their differences and similarities in the spirit of community and friendship.

All of us at FIUTS are excited about what is to come as we celebrate sixty years, and we look forward to finding creative ways to ensure that FIUTS remains a leader in peace-building at the University of Washington, in our region, and around the world.

FIUTS Executive Director

Join FIUTS for Take the World to Work Day! This one-day event will match international students individually or in small groups with professionals in their work places for a day, offering a rare glimpse inside the professional life.

Take the World to Work Day is scheduled for Thursday, February 7, 2008. Do you have a fascinating job that you would like to share with an international student? Could you welcome a group of students for a tour of your workplace? Click here to sign up as a Take The World to Work Day Host.

If you are not available to host for Take the World to Work day, consider joining FIUTS on Wednesday, February 6, for a special career networking Wednesday Lunch.

Check out the new Alumni Updates section of the FIUTS web site! It's a great way to share announcements or greetings with the FIUTS community, and to keep an eye on what your friends are up to!

If you have an announcement or message you'd like to add to the alumni updates page, send to to Alicia van der Veen.
MatthiasVisit
FIUTS received a visit from alum Matthias Schindler (Germany, 2001) last week, and he was here just in time to attend the winter quarter new student reception! Matthias is currently a post-doc at Ohio University. Here he is pictured with Executive Director Era Schrepfer and FIUTS host Jill Paaso. Thanks for the visit, Matthias!

Elder
The Elder Visit Program is part of a new FIUTS initiative to connect UW international students with local senior citizens. Students will visit local senior centers for informal events and presentations about their countries.

The first of these visits was a presentation by Caleb Tindano, a visiting student from Burkina Faso. Click here to see photos of Caleb's presentation.

ViewPointe residents will also join FIUTS for Wednesday Lunch on January 9th, and a group visit to the facility is planned for February.
david black
David Chancellor Black
May 31, 1932- December 24, 2007

FIUTS lost a great friend this month with the passing of David C. Black. David served on the FIUTS Board of Trustees from 1998 - 2004, and was a passionate supporter of FIUTS programs.

David and his wife, Inez, hosted FIUTS students for ten years and David was a regular at Wednesday Lunch, even during his long battle with cancer.

A memorial for David will be held at Saint Mark's Episcopal Cathedral (1245 10th Avenue E.) on Saturday, January 12, at 1:00pm. There will also be a community celebration of David's life on January 20th, 1:30pm at the Lopez Island Community Center.

Don't miss the FIUTS Winter Community Potluck!

A potluck is a gathering of people where each person is expected to bring a dish of food to be shared among the group.

Every FIUTS potluck is a wonderful way to meet FIUTS students, host families, and other community members, and to enjoy fabulous food from around the world!

The potluck will be held on Thursday, January 24, 2008, at 6 pm, at the UW Waterfront Activities Center (WAC).

The WAC is located directly behind Husky Stadium on Union Bay and the Montlake Cut. Parking is available in lot E12. PLEASE NOTE: To park, enter through Gate 8 and say you are there for the FIUTS Potluck. Be aware there is a UW women's basketball that evening, so be sure to follow these parking instructions carefully!

wedding photo
Hundreds of romances have bloomed at FIUTS, and we love to hear stories of weddings and children born to worldly FIUTS alumni - and we want to hear more!

Did you meet your partner at camp, at the Rotary Boat Cruise, or on the San Juan Island trip? What is your FIUTS Valentine's Day story?

Send us your FIUTS love story, and we'll share it with the community in the February edition of the FIUTS E- intercom and at fiuts.org!

At the intersection of the University of Washington and the community, FIUTS inspires lifelong engagement through activities that build global understanding.
