Community

The excitement of fall at the University of Washington is contagious. The start of the school year is a time of fresh starts and new friendships, and for new UW international students, it's a time of intense change.

During International Student Orientation, FIUTS begins to create connections among these new students. Orientation activities and information sessions help to bring a sense of community to what can be an overwhelming experience. The university can seem large and complex - FIUTS programs make the campus feel smaller.

The FIUTS community shares a belief in the power of friendship to create lasting peace. Our programs provide a sense of belonging and a shared vision to hundreds of students each year. Our members share values of open-mindedness and respect for the richness of cultures around the world.

Throughout the next months, there will be many opportunities to show your support for the FIUTS mission and foster international understanding, both at the University of Washington and beyond.

It's been an exciting time for the FIUTS staff and the more than 60 student facilitators that support the FIUTS International Student Orientation program.

Orientation began on Thursday, September 13, with Opening Day - a morning of presenters from the campus and FIUTS communities followed by a tour of Downtown Seattle. The next afternoon, students joined hundreds of community members for a community barbecue at Gas Works Park. In the ten days that followed, students attended information sessions and events, including long-time FIUTS traditions Cedar Springs Camp, The Underground Tour, The Space Needle & Spagetti Factory, and the Rotary Boat Cruise.

In addition to producing orientation programming, FIUTS connects new students with community members through the FIUTS Homestay Program. More than 130 new students spent their first week in Seattle with a local family, getting a first-hand look at US culture and making a strong local connection.

A special thanks is due to our orientation sponsors, Bank of America, Starbucks, US Bank, and Wells Fargo. And to all of our partner organizations and offices, including the University of Washington Office of Global Affairs, Office of Student Activities, Office of International Students and Scholars, and Seattle area Rotary clubs.

Thanks, too, to our Opening Day guest speakers, Dr. Matt Sparke, Dr. Vikram Prakash, Curt Devere, Director of the Office of International Students and Scholars, and FIUTS Board Member and Washington State Assistant Attorney General Dana Tumenova.

Akiko Visit
In early September, FIUTS enjoyed a visit from Professor Akiko Kumagai from Japan. Professor Kumagai is a noted authority on Latin American literature in Japan, and studied Spanish at the University of Washington in the early 60's. FIUTS staff, Student Board Member Sid Sinha, and FIUTS Board President Bryan Jarr shared a wonderful dinner with Akiko, and enjoyed stories of her experiences after she left the UW and FIUTS.

Another alumni gathering is in the works for later this month - this time in Vienna, Austria. Joining these small, casual gatherings is a wonderful way to connect with other FIUTS alumni in your area. Here are the details:

The event will be held at 6:00 pm on Sunday, October 28 at 7 Stern Bräu, (or Siebenstern Bräu), a popular brewery. Here's the address:

Siebensterngasse 19 1070 Wien Telefon: +43 1 523 86 97

If you are in the area and interested in attending, contact Carolyn Ho.

Are you planning a FIUTS alumni gathering in your country? Would you like to include an announcement in this newsletter or on the FIUTS alumni page? Send us an email and we will help you to find other FIUTS alumni who might be in your area.

FIUTS relies on gifts from individuals for at least 20% of our annual budget. Your generous contributions strengthen every aspect of our programming, from Wednesday Lunch to student support services to classroom outreach programs.

There are many ways to make a donation to FIUTS. Giving online is easy, or contributions can be mailed to the FIUTS office - HUB 302B, University of Washington, Seattle, WA 98195.

You can also give to FIUTS through your workplace giving program. For more information, read The Combined Fund Drive web page or The King County Employee Giving page.

With your generous support, FIUTS can continue to provide a sense of community to international students at the University of Washington and create lifelong connections between students and local residents.
Bloodletting Book
The new winner of the Giller Prize, Canada's top literary honor, is a collection of twelve interrelated stories about four young medical students and their unfolding lives as doctors.

The young Toronto author, Vincent Lam, is not only a doctor himself but a talented writer as well, with a swift, honest style and a compelling sense of storytelling. Again and again he quickly takes the moral pulse of a character. Some of these stories are knockouts, spellbinding plots with all kinds of messy complications and unexpected resolutions. A possible poisoning that's also a possible psychosis, a violent, mentally-unstable arrested man who may be the victim of police brutality, a harrowing pregnancy - these are the dramatic medical set-pieces against which the personal dramas unfold.

Lam presents the reader with the dizzying ambiguities that haunt physicians, making their lives a chain of educated guesses. How honest should a doctor be to a patient without hope? On an emergency, should a doctor run or walk down the hall? Is an elevator excusable when every second counts? What if the doctor suspects the police have gone a little too far? What if the doctor knows the anaesthesiologist won't get there in time?

Wednesday Lunch
Every week, FIUTS brings together hundreds of international students, domestic students, and community members for Wednesday Lunch. The food is simple and the atmosphere casual, but students and alumni consider this weekly gathering one of the most important FIUTS traditions.

Wednesday Lunch would not be possible without the support of our volunteers. Helping out with Wednesday Lunch is a wonderful way to support our organization and make friends who share your interest in meeting people from around the world.

Volunteers are needed from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm each week. Tasks include preparing trays of cheese and vegetables, arranging furniture and supplies, and cleaning and storing equipment.

If you are interested in learning more about Wednesday Lunch volunteering, call FIUTS at (206) 543-0735, send an email to India, or join us for an upcoming lunch in HUB 200 ABC.

FIUTS is looking for two students to fill part-time positions during the academic year: Education Outreach Assistant and Activities Assistant. Both positions are available starting on the first day of classes, and are only open to students who are eligible for federal work study, a form of financial aid.

FIUTS also has internship opportunties available, as well as several volunteer opportunities throughout the year. To learn more about these opportunities, send an email to FIUTS.

At the intersection of the University of Washington and the community, FIUTS inspires lifelong engagement through activities that promote global understanding.
