In early September, FIUTS enjoyed a visit from
Professor Akiko Kumagai from Japan. Professor
Kumagai is a noted authority on Latin
American literature in Japan, and studied
Spanish at the University of Washington in
the early 60's. FIUTS staff, Student Board
Member Sid Sinha, and FIUTS Board President
Bryan Jarr shared a wonderful dinner with
Akiko, and enjoyed stories of her experiences
after she left the UW and FIUTS.
Another alumni gathering is in the works for
later this month - this time in Vienna,
Austria. Joining these small, casual
gatherings is a wonderful way to connect with
other FIUTS alumni in your area. Here are the
details:
The event will be held at 6:00 pm on Sunday,
October 28 at 7

The new winner of the Giller Prize, Canada's top
literary honor, is a collection of twelve
interrelated
stories about four young medical students and
their
unfolding lives as doctors.
The young Toronto author, Vincent Lam, is not
only a
doctor himself but a talented writer as well,
with a
swift, honest style and a compelling sense of
storytelling. Again and again he quickly
takes the
moral pulse of a character. Some of these
stories are
knockouts, spellbinding plots with all kinds
of messy
complications and unexpected resolutions. A
possible
poisoning that's also a possible psychosis, a
violent,
mentally-unstable arrested man who may be the
victim of police brutality, a harrowing
pregnancy -
these are the dramatic medical set-pieces
against
which the personal dramas unfold.
Lam presents the reader with the dizzying
ambiguities
that haunt physicians, making their lives a
chain of
educated guesses. How honest should a doctor
be to
a patient without hope? On an emergency,
should a
doctor run or walk down the hall? Is an elevator
excusable when every second counts? What if the
doctor suspects the police have gone a little
too far?
What if the doctor knows the
anaesthesiologist won't
get there in time?

Every week, FIUTS brings together hundreds of
international students, domestic students, and
community members for Wednesday Lunch. The food
is simple and the atmosphere casual, but
students
and alumni consider this weekly gathering one
of the
most important FIUTS traditions.
Wednesday Lunch would not be possible without
the
support of our volunteers. Helping out with
Wednesday Lunch is a wonderful way to support
our
organization and make friends who share your
interest in meeting people from around the world.
Volunteers are needed from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
each
week. Tasks include preparing trays of
cheese and
vegetables, arranging furniture and supplies,
and
cleaning and storing equipment.
If you are interested in learning more about
Wednesday Lunch volunteering, call FIUTS at
(206)
543-0735, send an email to
India, or
join us for an upcoming lunch in HUB 200 ABC.
