Full Circle

Now that I've been with FIUTS for fifteen months, I have begun to discern the patterns of a "FIUTS year". From the excitement of new student orientation to the sadness of saying goodbye in the Spring to the quiet urgency of the summer, there is a definite seasonality to FIUTS that makes each quarter unique and fulfilling in its own way.

For the last few weeks, as our staff has been busy welcoming new students, preparing orientation materials, and placing homestays, I have been looking back over the past year as I prepare FIUTS' annual report for 2006/2007. It has been a challenging and inspiring year, and I feel fortunate to be part of the important work that FIUTS does.

Although we have been on the University of Washington campus since 1948, FIUTS is an independent non-profit organization that depends on a diverse base of funding, including program income, corporate sponsorship, and most importantly, gifts from individuals. I am so thankful to everyone who makes our programs possible through volunteering or by making a financial contribution.

Your support allows us to provide ongoing quality programs that inspire students to connect with each other and enrich our community and our world. I hope you'll take the time to read our annual report, and consider making a gift to FIUTS this year.

Onishis and Students
Many FIUTS students have already been matched with community host families for one-week homestays, and several are already in Seattle, but there are many more students arriving over the next few weeks that haven't been placed with a local family.

So if you've been thinking about hosting a student, but haven't tried it yet - now's the time. Hosting is a wonderful way to learn about other parts of the world and to share your own culture while helping a student adjust to the U.S. and the University of Washington.

barbecue2
Don't miss the FIUTS Community Barbecue! It will be a wonderful chance to welcome some of the more than 900 new students who will be coming to the UW for the first time this month. Meet students from around the world and celebrate FIUTS international community at this casual event.

The barbecue is scheduled for Friday, September 14, from 5-8 pm at Gas Works Park. FIUTS will provide burgers and hot dogs (and veggie versions), plates and napkins. Please bring a salad to share. Families are welcome!
This year, FIUTS will participate in both the Washington State Combined Fund Drive and the King County Employee Giving Campaign, making it easier than ever to support FIUTS' programs.

Each campaign provides a convenient way for state and county employees to designate FIUTS as the recipient of a one-time contribution, or of a monthly or quarterly payroll deduction.

To learn more about giving to FIUTS through these programs, contact your employer, or check out: The Combined Fund Drive web page or The King County Employee Giving page.
Mercy Book
This hilarious, harrowing new novel drags you into the heart of the African AIDS crisis.

Anna is a twenty-nine-year-old Italian news correspondent in Africa, with more handsome, interesting boyfriends than she knows what to do with, most of whom she betrays and treats terribly.

Mercy is Anna's housegirl. She's six-feet- tall, loud and bossy, and she dresses like a disco queen going clubbing. She's taken control of the house. Mercy is going to teach Anna how to act like "the big people of the world."

World journalist Lara Santoro comes at you two-fisted, but her larger-than-life character, Mercy, is in-your-face for the best of human reasons, and Santoro's portrait of a continent in crisis, her simmering anger and authority give this novel a bite and vivacity that set it apart.

Andy Pic
FIUTS is excited to announce a new addition to the FIUTS team. Andy Davey joined FIUTS this month as the Manager of Education Outreach (MEO). Andy comes to FIUTS with broad non-profit experience, plenty of international travel, and a passion for education and social justice.

As MEO, Andy will coordinate FIUTS' education outreach and visiting programs, coordinate study abroad and returner programming, and serve as the advisor to the FIUTS student board.

Andy has already started in his position, and is already at work on several programs. Please feel free to send him a note to introduce yourself!

FIUTS is looking for two students to fill part-time positions during the academic year: Education Outreach Assistant and Activities Assistant. Both positions are available starting on the first day of classes, and are only open to students who are eligible for federal work study, a form of financial aid.

FIUTS also has internship opportunties available, as well as several volunteer opportunities throughout the year. To learn more about these opportunities, send an email to FIUTS.

At the intersection of the University of Washington and the community, FIUTS inspires lifelong engagement through activities that promote global understanding.
