Here come the students!

It's almost August, and FIUTS is busily preparing for International Student Orientation, when we will welcome more than 800 new international students as they begin their studies at the University of Washington this fall.

FIUTS has produced activities for new UW international students since 1948, and many of the events planned for this year's orientation are longtime traditions. From camp to movie night to the annual Rotary Boat Cruise, new students have so many opportunities to make new friends, learn about the UW and the Pacific Northwest, and enjoy our beautiful city.

Daily one-hour sessions during orientation week provide information to new students on topics ranging from banking to campus safety to hiking. Do you have a great idea for a session topic or would you like to participate as a presenter? Send your thoughts to India Fitting.

Several orientation events include opportunities for FIUTS alumni and community members to welcome new students, too. Be sure to join us for the FIUTS community barbecue on Friday, September 14th. See the article below for more information and volunteer opportunities.

More than 100 UW international students will apply for FIUTS community homestays this fall. If you've considered becoming a FIUTS host, now is a wonderful time to get involved.

FIUTS Homestay hosts are families, single individuals, couples, and international student alumni. Most FIUTS homestays last one week, for the first week that a new student is in Seattle, but there are several other short-term hosting opportunities as well.

By offering your hospitality to an international student or scholar, you are not only sharing your home and your culture, but learning about another part of the world as well. Many FIUTS hosts have formed friendships with "their" students that last a lifetime.

barbecue2
From 1975 to 1993, FIUTS held a fall barbecue for students and community members at Seattle's Woodland Park. On Friday, September 14th, FIUTS will revive this community tradition at Seattle's Gasworks Park with a community event to welcome new students to the UW and Seattle.

The FIUTS Board of Trustees is inviting community members to volunteer for the event. Since more then 200 new students are expected to attend, we need teams of volunteers to shop at Costco, set up and decorate, and clean up.

The barbecue is scheduled for Friday, September 14, from 5-8 pm. FIUTS will provide burgers and hotdogs (and veggie versions), plates and napkins, please bring a salad to share.

If you are interested in volunteering to help out, email Alicia van der Veen to sign up for a task.

FIUTS creates a community of people who are dedicated to international understanding, cross- cultural exchange and fostering peace through friendship. In fact, many people have said that the "F" in FIUTS stands for friendship!

In November 2008, FIUTS will celebrate our 60th year of cultivating global understanding at the University of Washington and around the world, and we'd love to have your feedback! Your ideas and input will help to guide the planning of events both locally and around the world.
dinner out
FIUTS alumni span the globe, and we are always looking for new ways to engage alumni in ongoing activities that inspire international understanding. This fall, FIUTS will hold an event in Tokyo to bring together alumni and new students who are preparing to come to the UW this year.

Event Details:
Date: Thursday, August 30
Location: FUJIMAMAS at Harajuku Tokyo
Time: 7:00 - 9:00 pm
Cost: Please bring money for dinner - approximate cost per person is $20 (2300 Yen)

If you are a FIUTS alumni in Tokyo, this event is a wonderful opportunity to share stories about your fun experiences studying at the UW, see your friends from Seattle, and answer questions that new students or their families may ask.

3/4 cup milk
2 egg yolks
5 T sugar
3/4 cup heavy cream
1T maccha green tea powder
3 T hot water

  • Mix hot water and green tea powder, which you can buy at Uwajimaya, together in a bowl and set aside.
  • Lightly whisk egg yolks in a pan. Add sugar and mix well. Gradually add the milk and mix well.
  • Put the pan on low heat and heat the mixture, stirring constantly.
  • When the mixture begins to thicken, remove the pan from the heat and immediately soak the bottom of the pan in ice water to cool the mixture.
  • Add the green tea and egg mixture and mix well, cooling in ice water. Add whipped heavy cream in the mixture and stir gently. Pour the mixture in a container and freeze, stirring the ice cream a few times.
  • Makes 4-6 servings

At the intersection of the University of Washington and the community, FIUTS inspires lifelong engagement through activities that promote global understanding.
