Greetings!

Two weeks ago, I visited Minneapolis to attend NAFSA, the convention of the Association of International Educators. This annual gathering welcomes 7,500 exchange program and university administrators from more than 100 countries, and provides a wonderful opportunity to share ideas and build networks that support our students and our staff.

One of the many inspirational moments at NAFSA was the opening keynote address by former Secretary of State Colin Powell. A dedicated proponent of international education, Powell reviewed the many ways our country is enriched by the presence of international students on our campuses and the importance of sending US students abroad.

"If we are an open and welcoming country, we keep our society fresh and moving forward as an inspiration to the world," Powell said, "...Thank you for sharing your America."

His speech reminded me of the many small ways FIUTS and other university exchange programs promote peace and understanding every day. Thank you to everyone who supports this important work, for sharing your country and building peace one friendship at a time.

gala photo 07
On May 19, FIUTS celebrated all the accomplishments of the year - Bollywood style! Presented by the FIUTS Student Board, The 2007 FIUTS Global Gala was better than ever, with more than 175 students attending to dance the evening away, taste wonderful treats by Cedars Restaurant, and enjoy a variety of cultural performances.

The Gala planning committee did a wonderful job of building excitement for the event through presentations at Wednesday Lunch, Bollywood movie nights, and plenty of messages on the FIUTS Facebook Page.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of FIUTS annual student awards, presented to three students who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to international understanding over the past year. The James M. Davis Award was presented to FIUTS volunteer Emily Williams. The Elizabeth Gould Award was presented to FIUTS Student Board Member Mathieu Fregueau. The Lulu Fairbanks Award was presented to Barna De, volunteer editor of the FIUTS weekly newsletter.

The Global Gala would not have been possible without the support of our generous sponsors. Thanks to the University of Washington Alumni Association , GPSS, and The Student Activities and Union Facilities Office for support of the Gala.

host&student
In a few months, more than 900 new international students will arrive at the University of Washington. From September 1 - 25, approximately 150 of these students will apply for a FIUTS homestay.

Most FIUTS homestays last one week. During the homestay, host families provide advice and support to introduce the student to Seattle and to U.S. culture.

Hosting a FIUTS student is a wonderful way to travel the world without leaving home. It is a unique opportunity to share your own culture, learn about another part of the world, and make a lifelong friend.

Here's another great way to stay connected to your FIUTS friends, and to other UW alumni around the world. UW HuskyConnect is a new social networking site developed just for UW alum and friends.

Create a user account from the HuskyConnect home page and search for the FIUTS group. You can also find groups based on academic departments and other interests.

An Engineering Grad student from 96-98, Paul currently works with UNESCO in the Horn of Africa.

Thanks for keeping in touch, Paul, and for the great photo, Anita!

peace sign
AFS Intercultural Programs has created a Peace Petition as a worldwide effort in support of global expansion of youth exchange programs. The aim of the petition is to encourage world leaders to increase intercultural programming for students around the world.

The petition will be presented to the United Nations in a ceremony in New York in October, 2007.

At the intersection of the University of Washington and the community, FIUTS inspires lifelong engagement through activities that promote global understanding.
