Endings and Beginnings

Spring may be a time of new beginnings, but at FIUTS, Spring means saying goodbye. During the year, we get to know hundreds of inspiring students. Some stay for years, but most go home after only a short time.

If you will leave the UW this year, I hope that you look back on a long list of accomplishments. You should be proud of your courage and commitment in coming to a new place. With a calendar filled with finals and social events, I hope you take the time you need to say goodbye to new friends and prepare yourself for your return home.

For the FIUTS staff, the end of the school year means something else, too - a whole new group of friends to stay in touch with around the world. The FIUTS alumni network creates connections between fifty-eight years of UW international students. We hope you'll stay in touch and let us know where your next adventure leads!

Alicia van der Veen, FIUTS Office Manager and Activities Coordinator, has a new position: Homestay and Community Relations Coordinator. In addition to placing incoming students in short-term homestays, she will help to promote FIUTS programs within our community and around the world.

Erin Goodman, FIUTS Manager of Education Outreach, will be leaving FIUTS this month for a new opportunity. We are sad to see her go, but wish her luck in her new position. Thanks for all your hard work, Erin!
Thanks to those who attended the FIUTS Spring Potluck! It was wonderful to see so many students, host families, and donors come together for an evening of sharing and great food!

Harmony Run
This summer, Seattle will be one of the US Cities hosting The World Harmony Run, a global torch relay that seeks to promote international friendship and peace. People from communities all along the route will join together to cheer on the runners and celebrate grassroots efforts to promote international understanding around the globe.

The World Harmony Run will also be stopping at 10 area schools to introduce educational programming aimed to foster future stewards of the environment and international exchange.

Join The World Harmony Run for a welcome ceremony at Westlake Park in downtown Seattle to celebrate the worldwide effort on Friday, June 1st, at 5:00 PM. The event will feature musical performances. by????

The Reluctant Fundamentalist, by Mohsin Hamid

At the table sit two men: a young Pakistani named Changez and an unnamed American. Only Changez speaks, and his mesmerizing voice relates his story, beginning with his happy days at Princeton and continuing through his initial success as a well-paid financial analyst.

Then come the attacks of September 11. Over the next few months, slowly but inexorably, the innocence of Changez's ambition is shadowed by his experience of the unexpected political present -- and by his altered understanding of his Pakistani past.

The Reluctant Fundamentalist is the featured book for The FIUTS/University Book Store International Book Club meeting in May. The meeting will held on Tuesday, May 22, at 3:00 pm in HUB 204N.
FIUTS is excited to annouce a new partnership with the University of Washington Alumni Association. The UWAA creates a vibrant program of events for almost 50,000 University of Washington graduates and friends. Membership in the UW Alumni Association is the best way for anyone to be part of the UW's tradition of excellence, and it's a great way to stay connected to your FIUTS friends, too!

Watch future editions of the FIUTS E-news for more updates as our partnership develops.

1 1/2 lb. fresh or canned sour cherries
1 tsp. grated lemon peel
1 tsp. lemon juice
5 oz. powdered sugar
4-5 cloves
dash of cinnamon
1 c. sour cream
1 tbsp.. flour
yolk of 1-2 eggs

  • Wash the cheries and remove the pits. Cook in 1 qt. water. (If using canned cherries, include the juice.) Add a pinch of salt, the lemon peel, the powdered sugar, the cloves (placed in a tea bag) and the cinnamon. Bring to a boil.
  • Combine the flour with 2 tbsp. sour cream until smooth. Dilute with 1/2 cup water, and stirring constantly, add to the soup.
  • Continue to boil over medium flame for 5 to 6 minutes or less if using canned sour cherries.
  • Remove the tea bag and let cool a bit.
  • In the soup bowl, mix the egg yolks with the remaining sour cream, and stirring constantly, pour into the hot soup.
  • Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving

Note: You can substitute heavy cream for some of the sour cream, and add a bit of cognac, provided there are no children at the table.

At the intersection of the University of Washington and the community, FIUTS inspires lifelong engagement through activities that promote global understanding.
