Conversation

Since the time of the earliest humans, conversation has helped us to make sense of our world, answer common questions, and imagine the future. In today's busy world, talking with each other is so constant and mundane that we don't stop to consider a deeper meaning. But how can we create conversations that do more than just relay information?

Started in Seattle in 2001, the Conversation Cafe movement, based in local coffee shops, creates simple, hosted opportunities for people to talk about issues that matter. The conversation cafe format helps people feel at ease and gives everyone who wants it a chance to speak.

From March 25 - April 1, FIUTS will participate in Conversation Week, a week-long global, collaborative effort based on the idea of the Conversation Cafe. Conversation Week was created to promote conversation as a powerful way to bring people together to talk about issues and learn from each other. In honor of Conversation Week, FIUTS will host conversations at the first Wednesday Lunch of Spring quarter, Wednesday, March 28, 11:30 am - 1:30 pm in HUB 200.

The Conversation Week team has provided the opening questions - a list of thought-provoking, inclusive questions selected to inspire dialog on important issues. The questions we will explore include:

  • What do you think is the most important question in the world now?
  • How much is enough? For you? For others?
  • What do you believe freedom is for?

Consider joining us for this inspiring Wednesday Lunch!

anniversary cake
On August 20, 2008, FIUTS will celebrate sixty years of dedication to international understanding. Join FIUTS later this month to kick-off our 60th anniversary planning.

This is an open meeting with the hopes of creating a 60th anniversary committee comprised of both current FIUTS board members, students, and staff, past board and staff, alumni, and community members. We hope to have an international set of committee members, so don't let geography get in your way of being involved. The ideas for the 60th are already coming in... and they are exciting! Come share your thoughts on around-the-world events, virtual reunions, and cultural activities engaging our community. What are your ideas?

Meeting details:

Aya, by Marguerite Abouet and Clement Oubrerie

A graphic novel set in 1970's Ivory Coast, Aya tells the story of the studious and clear-sighted Aya, her easygoing friends Adjoua and Bintou, and their meddling relatives and neighbors. It's a breezy and funny account of the desire for joy and freedom, and of the simple pleasures and private troubles of everyday life in working-class Yopougon (Yop City.) An unpretentious and gently humorous story of an Africa we rarely see-spirited, hopeful, and resilient--Aya won the 2006 award for Best First Album at the Angoulême International Comics Festival. Clément Oubrerie's warm colors and energetic, playful lines connect expressively with Marguerite Abouet's vibrant writing.

Aya will be the featured book for The FIUTS/University Book Store International Book Club meeting in April. The meeting will held on Tuesday, April 17th, at 3:00 pm in HUB 204N.
