The Rhythm of the Year

The University of Washington community seems almost tranquil these days,

New international students depend on FIUTS for information and assistance, especially during their first months in Seattle. The FIUTS staff provide opportunities for them to meet others through our event and activities calendar and Wednesday Lunch. We answer questions about our country, city and campus and provide referrals on topics ranging from good restaurants to housing to legal and health issues.

The same nervous students who arrived just a few months ago have settled into life here, adjusted to the campus, and made plenty of new friends. In the FIUTS office, the relative calm of winter quarter is bittersweet; we're glad the new students are doing well, and we welcome the calmer days, but we miss seeing them every day. The FIUTS office feels a bit like an "empty nest!"

And like parents, seeing students develop into true members of the University community is what we work for. More than 1,000 new students come to the UW each year, and FIUTS plays an integral role in their success. We are so proud of all of our new students this year - and now it's time for us to begin planning for next fall!

anniversary cake
According to About.com, The tradition of celebrating a 60th anniversary came into popularity after Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee. The traditional gift for the 60th is diamonds, which is a wonderful symbol of lasting dedication.

On August 20, 2008, FIUTS will celebrate sixty years of dedication to international understanding. As we embark on planning a fitting tribute to the people who have made up FIUTS' history, we also look forward to the next sixty years.

What kind of event would be a true celebration of our shared passion? How can we recognize and include our world-wide community? FIUTS welcomes ideas and thoughts as we begin planning the festivities.

baby ryan
We are excited to announce that FIUTS alumni Pierre Chambon welcomed baby Ryan Luca on February 5. He is a tiny baby boy, weighing in at just 5 pounds 13 ounces, and measuring 18 inches.

Pierre, who received his Masters in Aerospace Engineering in August, 2005, met his wife Rebecca while she was studying abroad in France in 2001.

Congratulations, Pierre and Rebecca!

uncomfortable dead
The Uncomfortable Dead, by Paco Ignacio Taibo II and Subcomandante Marcos

Mexican crime writer Taibo and Subcomandante Marcos, the real-life spokesperson for the Zapatista movement, provide alternating chapters for this postmodern mystery about good, evil and revolutionary politics.

Meet country bumpkin detective hero Elias Contreras as he bumbles his way through the confusing political world of modern Mexico City. The authors mix mystery with surrealism: characters operate from beyond the grave or chat about the roles they play in the novel, and Marcos writes his fictional self into the story. It's a wacky and wonderful romp through mystery noir.

The February meeting of the FIUTS/University Book Store International Book Club will be held on Tuesday, February 27th, at 3:00 pm in HUB 204N.
