Greetings!
Era Pic

Thousands of students have come through the FIUTS door looking for friendship, help, and advice. For many of them, FIUTS is a place for quick answers from a kind and helpful person.
FIUTS gives these students support.

For others, FIUTS is more than just a place to come with a problem. It is the core of their experience at the UW and in Seattle. For these students, FIUTS is the place where friends from across the globe are made through shared experiences and open conversations.
FIUTS gives these students community.

Hundreds of schoolchildren have met international students through FIUTS education outreach programs, FIUTS is a glimpse into the rest of the world and a vision of what their future could be.
FIUTS gives these students perspective.

What FIUTS gives to students is often intangible and immeasureable - but it has a lasting impact on our community and our world. As a non-profit organization, FIUTS depends upon your gift - the generous financial support of individuals dedicated to promoting global friendship and understanding. Click on this link to make your financial gift to FIUTS this year.

Thank you.

Thanksgiving
Thanks to all the families who opened their homes to students for Thanksgiving dinner. From the student response, everyone had a wonderful time eating yummy food and learning about this American tradition.
The 7th annual CulturalFest, produced by the FIUTS Student Board, was another huge success! Country booths represented the diversity of the University of Washington campus and included Saudi Arabia, Japan, Germany, Turkmenistan, Korea, Latvia, France, and more!

Students from Hamilton International Middle School joined us for an opportunity to learn about the many cultures here at UW! Over 50 6th graders enjoyed exploring the different booths and getting their "passports" stamped!

Int'l women's day
Submit a photo for International Women's Month

March 8th is International Women's Day, a global celebration that recognizes women's centuries-long struggle for equality, justice and peace. The first International Women's Day was celebrated on February 28th, 1909. Women's History Month began as a weeklong celebration to coincide with International Women's Day in 1978, then Congress expanded the week to a full month in 1987.

To commemorate this event, FIUTS invites photo submissions on the theme, "Women's Roles Around the World" for an exhibit in the HUB gallery from March 5-19.

Submittal Guidelines:
  • Photos must be 5" x 7" individual prints in color or black and white
  • Up to 2 photos may be submitted per person
  • Students, faculty, staff, and community members are welcome to submit photos
  • With each photo, please indicate the name of the photographer, email and phone contact information, and location the photograph was taken

Send FIUTS an email if you have any questions about the exhibit.

walt williams
In Memory of FIUTS Supporter Walter Williams

FIUTS has learned with great sadness that Walter Williams, longtime FIUTS supporter, passed away on November 9. Former President and Chairman of Continental Mortgage and Loan (now HomeStreet Bank), Walter was an influential member of Seattle's business community and served as a Washington State Senator from 1963-1971.

Throughout his life, Walter was dedicated to international understanding and friendship. A Japanese Language Officer in World War II, Walter made many lifelong friends in Japan, and eventually served as president of the Japanese-American Society of Washington. His life was a true example of leadership and friendship that spanned the globe.

Try this fabulous dish from the upcoming edition of the FIUTS Cookbook! Published intermittently for more than 30 years, the FIUTS cookbook featured recipes from around the world submitted by students, alumni, and hosts.

If you would like to submit a recipe for the 2006/2007 edition of the cookbook, please send it by email to erin@fiuts.org or by mail to: FIUTS Box 352233, University of Washington Seattle, WA 98195

Wednesday Lunch Volunteers

Do you have free time on Wednesday mornings? FIUTS needs Wednesday Lunch Volunteers! This wonderful group comes in each week between 10:00 and 2:00 to help assemble and serve trays of food to the more than 200 students who join us for lunch each week.

Our volunteers enjoy a chance to meet students and others from around the world and get a firsthand perspective of FIUTS programs.

eggersbook
There will be no FIUTS/University Book Store International Book Group meeting in December, but the holiday break would be a great time to get a head start on our January pick!

In Dave Eggers' gripping new book, What is the What, we'll meet Valentino Achak Deng. Deng is a Sudanese "Lost Boy," and his story is one of unimaginable suffering. Forced to flee his village by the murahaleen (Muslim militias armed by the government in Khartoum), he survives marathon walks, starvation, disease, soldiers, bandits, land mines, lions, and refugee camps before winning the right to immigrate to the U.S.--a move he sees as nothing short of salvation. Deng is a real person, and this story, told in his voice, is mostly true.

The January meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 23rd, at 3:00 pm. Location information will be sent out in next month's newsletter.

At the intersection of the University of Washington and the community, FIUTS inspires lifelong engagement through activities that promote global understanding.
