According to Webster's Dictionary, to ORIENT is to set or arrange in any determinate position especially in relation to the points of the compass: to ascertain the bearings of.

As this year's International Student Orientation comes to an end, I've been thinking about why orientation can be so critical to a student's success. For students who are arriving in a new country, or leaving for a study abroad program, "getting your bearings" is an important part of preparing for a truly life changing experience.

Many international students have told me that some of the strongest memories of their time at the UW were from orientation activities. It's easy to understand why - each day brings another opportunity to make new friends, try new things, and learn something about our culture.

If you were a new student this year, I hope you have many good memories from this year's orientation events. If you are preparing to study abroad, I hope you consider your FIUTS orientation an opportunity to ask any questions you have as you embark on your amazing adventure.

Remember, also, that FIUTS events, including Wednesday Lunch, community potlucks, and our weekly calendar of activities are an excellent way of "orienting yourself" to our world by meeting people from across the globe - I hope you'll join us soon!

Book Oct 06
We are so excited to announce the first meeting of the FIUTS/University Book Store International Book Club! Join others who are interested in discussing current fiction from an international perspective. Each month, we will announce the book in this newsletter, along with the meeting date and location.

Feel free to drop in for any meeting that is interesting to you - the group is open to anyone who enjoys reading and sharing their opinions. The group will be facilitated by Nick DiMartino, from the University Book Store HUB store, and the University Book Store will offer the book selection at a 20% discount for the month before the group meets.

Our first title will be Chicken with Plums, by Marjane Satrapi, the Iranian author whose stark, deceptively simple black and white pictures illustrate her emotional storytelling.

Book Club Meeting Information:

Time: 2 pm
Location: HUB Location to be determined, meet in the FIUTS Office, HUB 302B

2006 Boat Cruise
Fall International Student Orientation A Huge Success!

FIUTS is grateful to the many people who supported the FIUTS International Student Orientation this year. It's impossible to name them all, but we would like to thank several groups who helped make the 12-day event a success:

Our host families, who opened their homes and their hearts to offer a glimpse into American culture that is so difficult to see from a dorm room.

Our session presenters, who gave advice on topics ranging from responsible banking to the best hiking trails to navigating the university's libraries and our city's streets.

Rotary International, for their sponsorship of the International Student Boat Cruise. 400 International Students joined local rotarians for a beatiful day on the water - a twenty year tradition! And to student Peter Lin for taking this and so many other beautiful pictures!

The diverse group of FIUTS student facilitators, led by members of the FIUTS Student Board, who took charge of social events and took new students on outings around the city, sharing their own experiences.

And of course, this year's corporate sponsors provided financial support for all of these programs. Thanks so much to Acacia Court, Bank of America, Lorig Management Services, Tim's Cascade Chips, University Book Store, University Rotary, Wells Fargo Bank, and the University of Washington Office of Global Affairs.

Thank you to everyone - we look forward to working with you over the year ahead!

Fall Potluck and Pumpkin Carving, October 26
Join FIUTS for the first community potluck of the year, October 26 from 4 pm - 7 pm. Held quarterly at the UW's Waterfront Activities Center, FIUTS potlucks are a wonderful way to welcome new students, meet community members, and share your own international story.

Bring a dish to share, and your own pumpkin to carve or paint. FIUTS will provide beverages, paint, and carving tools.

The waterfront activities center is located directly behind Husky Stadium on Union Bay and the Montlake Cut.
