Greetings!
Era Pic

As I write these words, FIUTS prepares to greet a new group of international students to the University of Washington. Orientation planning is often hectic, but through the entire process, I have been struck so many times by the generosity of the FIUTS student facilitators.

Facilitators dedicate part of summer vacation to plan welcome activities for new students and provide feedback and support to staff throughout orientation planning. Always ready to lend a hand, show a student around, and share personal experiences, this amazing group helps to ease every new student's transition.

Volunteers are the embodiment of the FIUTS mission: to inspire lifelong engagement in experiences that build global understanding.

Thank you to every student facilitator this year for your dedication and hard work!

Champs Elyses
A Canadian in Europe
by Mathieu Fregeau

As a graduate student, I sometimes have the chance to attend international conferences. After two years of research at UW, I was invited to present my work-in- progress at an International Symposium in Heidelberg Germany. And after 2 years involved in the wonderful FIUTS world, I have friends from around the world. Neither time nor distance is enough to forget such friendships.

Last Minute Hosts Still Needed!
What do Yuko from Japan and Samuel from France have in common? They will be arriving over the next few weeks, and they still need host families! Although FIUTS Homestay Coordinators have placed over 100 new students with homestay families this fall, there are still requests for hosts that have not been met!

If you have considered hosting, but never made the call to FIUTS, now's the time - our week-long homestays are a wonderful opportunity to learn about another part of the world, and to share a bit of American Culture with a new student.

If you want to learn more about volunteering as a FIUTS host, write to one of our Homestay Coordinators today!
University of Washington is named number 22 on Newsweek's ranking of Top 100 Global Universities
Congratulations to the University of Washington for being included on this prestigious list of Universities from around the world that are recognized leaders in global education. Newsweek ranked the schools based on a variety of factors, including number of foreign students, study abroad opportunities, library collections, and research.

FIUTS has always believed in the power of "citizen diplomacy" - that friendship can break down barriers between people. And we are proud to play a part in creating the University of Washington's global community.

Weds Lunch
First Wednesday Lunch: September 27
Don't miss the first Wednesday Lunch of the school year - it's a wonderful opportunity to meet new friends! Wednesday Lunch is a free activity, hosted by FIUTS every week during the academic year.

Started in 1977, Wednesday Lunch is the longest standing international gathering on campus. Approximately 200 students, faculty, and community members join FIUTS each week for food, conversation, and fun.

We hope you will find the time to drop by the 2nd floor of the HUB on Wednesday, September 27th, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm - everyone is invited!

This year, we're hoping to revive a FIUTS tradition - the FIUTS cookbook. Published intermittently for more than 30 years, the FIUTS cookbook featured recipes from around the world submitted by students, alumni, and hosts.

If you would like to submit a recipe for the 2006/2007 edition of the cookbook, please send it by email to erin@fiuts.org or by mail to: FIUTS Box 352233, University of Washington Seattle, WA 98195
