Greetings!

Well, it's finally here- CPAT will be hosting our annual charity curling tournament on February 17th from 2- 12PM at the National Capital Curling Center in Laurel. We are very excited for this years' event and hope to raise more money for our charities than ever! This years' event will again include a silent auction with lots of great items to bid on: Autographed sports memorabilia, restaurant gift certificates, and much more!! With the addition of online bidding, we hope to generate even more excitement from our auction! We hope to see lots of you there, it is a great time, even if you have never curled or don't even know what curling is!! Instructors will be on hand to give you some pointers!
We are also very pleased to announce that CPAT along with The Greene Turtle Restaurant in Columbia will be hosting "Funds for Friends." The Greene Turtle will be donating a generous portion of their proceeds on Tuesday, February 13th to UMDF. We invite all of you to visit the Greene Turtle for lunch, dinner, happy hour, or all three- and enjoy some great food, good drinks, and fun times with our staff, and it's all for a good cause! We thank the Greene Turtle for hosting this event and their very generous support!! See you on the ice in a couple weeks!

So, What is Curling???

Why it's ok to throw rocks at houses.....

Curling dates to the 16th century, when Scottish farmers whiled away dull, icy winters by sliding heavy granite stones across frozen lochs. Curling first appeared as a demonstration sport in the Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix, France, in 1924. Curling made its Olympic medal debut at the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan. (Took a while to catch on apparently) The modern curling stone is made of highly polished granite, concave on the bottom, allowing the stone to slide down the ice and “curl” more than if it had a flat surface. A plastic handle is bolted onto every stone in order to deliver and release it. The game is played between two four-member teams who use stones with different colored handles. Each team tries to get their stone or stones closer to the center of the house- a series of 3 concentric circles (Remember geometry??), than their opponent. Sounds easy, right?? Although not as easy as it may sound, it can be a whole lot of fun, and we really hope to see a lot of you out there- even if you're not curling, come see what it's all about and help support two great causes!! About our charities..

UMDF and The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research

Our curling event has turned out to be more popular than we ever could have imagined. Thanks to our wonderful staff and generous sponsors, it has become an annual event that raises money for two charities very special to the CPAT family.
The United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF), is a charity we support because of a very special young man who we at CPAT have come to know over the years. In order to help support research into this group of diseases, UMDF is one of the charities benefiting form our event.
UMDF helps to redefine hope for families affected by mitochondrial diseases – hereditary disorders, now considered as common as childhood cancers, that affect the cell's ability to produce life-sustaining energy. UMDF offers support to all sufferers of mitochondrial disorders regardless of diagnosis, suspected or confirmed. Their mission is to promote research and education for the diagnosis, treatment and cure of mitochondrial disorders and to provide support to affected individuals and families.
Our second beneficiary, The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, was chosen because of the passing of the father of someone in the CPAT family. The Lustgarten Foundation provides funding for research into the biology, diagnosis, and prevention of adenocarcinoma of the pancreas, as well as research into various treatment modalities.
We are once again very happy to be supporting these two wonderful charities, and hope you will come out and show your support!!
