August Greetings,

This will more than likely be the last Quilt Fun newsletter I send out.  A new person has stepped forward to take on the job of producing the newsletter, Cindie White-Weiss, a member of the Bayberry Quilters of Cape Cod guild.  Cindie uses this same email marketing software so the transition should be easy for her.

You can continue to send your event submissions to me until Cindie has her own system set up and an email address that she'll use exclusively for Quilt Fun.  Cindie is eager to take on the newsletter and I hope you'll join me in wishing her well as she continues to provide the New England quilting community with all the "need to know" information you want!  Thanks to those of you who have emailed me your kind words of thanks for producing Quilt Fun the past several years.  I'm happy to hear that you've appreciated it!

As in the past, additions to the list of events are marked with an asterisk (*) as well as items that have been updated.  Events are in chronological order.

Some events for early 2011 are starting to appear, however those far into the new year will be posted in future newsletters.  If you have questions about a submitted event please contact me.  Thank you for all your submissions!

Current Exhibit:  Contemporary Broderie Perse:  An Elegant Revival
July 15-Oct. 17, 2010

Combining collage, fine appliqué, and fine quilting, broderie perse, also known as cut-out chintz appliqué, presents a high point in the art of quilting and deserves the admiration and attention of all who appreciate fine needlework.  The technique emerged in the late eighteenth century when chintz fabrics were very expensive and only the very wealthy could afford whole cloth bed coverings made from large pieces of chintz.  By cutting motifs out of a small amount of fabric, the quilter could rearrange them onto a large field of inexpensive plain cotton to imitate the designs on larger fabrics.  Plain cream or white fields filled by fine quilting surround the trees, floral sprays, wreaths, urns, birds, and baskets appliquéd with tiny whip, buttonhole, or reverse buttonhole stitches.

Museum Offers Publicity & Marketing Partnership with Guilds

As part of the Museum's effort to support the growth of quilting, and to show appreciation for the guilds that have provided the Museum with so much varied support over the years, the Museum offers two programs to help guilds' efforts to market themselves, at reduced or no cost:

The Ad Swap Program provides NEQM Supporting Guilds with a free series of ads in the Museum's email newsletter, in exchange for a full-page ad in the guild's next show program. To participate, guilds provide a digital image of their logo, a 75-word description of their show, including dates and special attractions, and their web address and preferred email contact address.

The Postcard Program provides professionally-designed postcards to distribute for publicity. Glossy, standard-sized postcards, 4" by 6", can feature a photo of the guild's raffle quilt, while the back can contain any text the guild chooses. An order of 1,000 cards is $125 plus shipping, and will be designed for your guild.Your guild does not need to be a supporting guild to participate in the Postcard Program.

To participate in either of these programs, or to find out more, contact PR & Marketing Manager Chrissy Inge at pubrel@nequiltmuseum.org or 978-452-4207, ext. 19.

NEQM Quilt Featured in New Book

A Red, White and Blue Quilt from the permanent collection of the New England Quilt Museum is featured in a new book written by NEQM member Sue Reich. Sue is a quilter, quilt historian and author of previous books. She has spent five years researching her new book, World War II Quilts (2010, Schiffer Publishing). In 2005, Sue was guest curator of the exhibit World War II Quilts at the New England Quilt Museum.

NEQM's quilt, Flag Squares, 1991.24, was made in 1945 from a pattern published by Farm Journal Magazine. Sue's book features the Museum's quilt on page 183 and also on the back cover of her book. On page 181 she shows the pattern booklet for the quilt, which sold for 10 cents in 1945. NEQMs quilt was donated by the Binney family.
Look for Sue's book, World War II Quilts, in the New England Quilt Museum shop.

Quilt Artist Ethel Shulam to be featured in magazine

Quilt artist Ethel Shulam is included as one of the featured artists in the August Cloth, Paper, Scissors Studio publication from Interweave Press (the publishers of Quilting Arts magazine).  You will get a peek into Ethel's studio and learn some of her helpful hints.  Ethel is currently a volunteer at NEQM and has taught quilting in the north shore area for over 25 years.  She has quilts in three books as well as several well-known magazines.  She is also one of the founding members of the New England Quilt Guild.  You may have seen her quilts in various shows over the years.  Ethel is very excited about this great magazine piece so if you can find this publication in your area, do check it out!  Borders and the New England Quilt Museum carry this and it can be purchased online at Interweave Press's web site as well.
