Skate & Blade Tips
by coach Stefanie David Jenkins When you have a pair of skates, do you ever wonder whether or not you have enough ankle support? Or why you are having so much trouble staying on a straight line with a one foot glide? Here are some helpful tips: Before you get a pair of skates, hold the skate upside down by the top of the skate. If the skate leans or flops over, there is not enough ankle support. When you start to do elements such as 3-turns, waltz jumps or spins, you need ankle support. Sometimes you have plenty of support but cannot hold a one foot glide. Have you ever noticed you either pronate or supinate (when you stand with your feet together side by side and your feet roll inwards or out)? This might just mean you need to get your blade moved to find YOUR center of balance. If your sole is plastic, it may be difficult to move the blades. With the leather sole (or what looks like wood) blades can be moved. Also, be sure to lace your skates up correctly. When you lace up your skates, start at the bottom, pull tightly and move upward on the skate. Just before you get to the hooks, tie it and tug on the laces. When lacing up the hooks, make sure you keep your ankle nice and straight. Some skaters like to have their skates tighter than others, but please make sure to keep the skates snugly tied. These are just a few helpful tips when you buy a pair of skates or if you already have a pair. If you are not sure about the skates you have, do not hesitate to ask one of our coaches. Any one of them will be more than happy to help! |

| SKATING TIP |

Taking Care of your Skates
Having well maintained skates is just as important as practicing your skills. Here are a few tips to make sure your skates are in great shape... Even if you are only a casual skater, the metal blades on your ice skates need to be kept sharp and in good condition in order to perform the best. How often you need to sharpen them depends on how many hours a week you use your skates; once every session will definitely be sufficient for skaters in a Basic Skills program. Sharp skates will help skaters acquire their skills easier and move faster across the ice with significantly less slippage. Blades also needs to be kept dry - make sure that you dry your blades after every skating session and cover them with soakers to dry up any condensation and to protect the blades from nicks.
Your boots also need attention! As the summer approaches there will be a significant amount of humidity. After you are done skating for the day, open your bag and pull your tongues back so the boot can air out. If skates are left in your car all summer (in a closed bag), they can grow mold when can lead to the leather breaking down! Taking the time to air out your boots will lead to a longer boot life.
You can leave your skates for sharpening any time at the Front Desk. Just leave your name, number, and the day/time that you will be back to pick up your skates, and we will do the rest!
