LA JOLLA, CA, FEBRUARY 2010:
Continuing
an exciting year at The Children's School, the school's board of trustees
recently announced that it has hired veteran administrator and former science
teacher Brian Oliphant of Harbor Day School in Corona del
Mar to become the school's next Head of School.
Oliphant
will replace outgoing head Molly Huffman, effective July 2010. Huffman has
overseen a period of great growth at the school during her nine-year tenure,
including the current construction of five buildings for middle and elementary
school students and the opening of the Nelson Middle Years program. She is relocating to San
Francisco at the end of this school year where she
begin her tenure as head of school at the Preschool-8th Children's Day School.
Oliphant
will bring more than 25 years of teaching and administrative experience to The
Children's School. He is currently director of the upper school at Harbor Day
where he has been for seven years. In addition to overseeing students and
faculty, Oliphant created and implemented a social curriculum to meet the
unique needs of middle school students. Prior to Harbor Day, Oliphant was at Campbell Hall School in North
Hollywood for 14 years. He served as dean of students, directed
outdoor education programs, taught science and social studies and coached
several sports teams. A native of Scotland, Brian earned degrees in
science, including a master's in environmental sustainability with distinction
from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.
Oliphant
was unanimously chosen for the position following an intense search that
garnered national and international interest, said Judybeth Tropp, president of the
school's board.
"Brian's
experience, his passion for education and his commitment to innovative,
hands-on learning made him the ideal choice to lead our school as we strive to
offer San Diego
families and their children the best independent school education available,"
she said. "Our entire community is thrilled to welcome him."
Oliphant
said he was impressed by the learning connections between students and teachers
at The Children's School.
"From the
moment I set foot on the campus, I could feel that wonderful things were
happening in every classroom. There is a strong sense of community,
collaboration and creativity - a pervasive atmosphere for love of learning," he
said. "My family and I are extremely excited about my appointment as Head of
School at TCS beginning in July."
