FREE Virtual ADHD Strategy Series For Parents Of Children With ADHD

Boston, MA - May, 2008 --

Dr. Rory Stern is a recent guest author to the ADHD Information Library who has a lot of insights into the "coaching" and motivational aspects of helping children and teens with ADHD. As a former therapist, working with children and their families, Dr. Stern found that ADHD affects the entire family and not just the child who is diagnosed. In addition, he also noticed certain recurrent themes that were being overlooked as a part of treatment.

So, Dr. Stern has organized a VIRTUAL LEARNING EVENT to help support parents of children with ADHD.  This 6 week series will include 12 speakers who will focus on providing parents with a solid foundation of information and strategies that start being used immediately.

"When first suggested or initially diagnosed with ADHD, many parents can feel as if they are alone in this struggle," says Dr. Stern.  He observed that suddenly the diagnosis is made, and many families are left to deal with the aftermath without any additional information or supports added.  Often not knowing who to turn to for help or  just feeling stuck and fighting what can feel like an impossible battle, something needed to change.

With the help and support of many noted ADHD advocates, Dr. Stern has organized The ADHD Strategy Series. This virtual event brings together a united effort to provide parents with information and strategies that can make a real difference - for themselves, their children, and their families - almost immediately.

Starting Monday, May 19th, 2008 at 8:30 PM EDT, and taking place every Monday and Wednesday night through July 2nd, registered guests will be able to dial in and listen to these calls for FREE.

In an effort to ensure this information is available to all who are interested, Dr. Stern is also offering a 24-36 hour replay line of the call.  Additionally, for those interested, there will be an opportunity to purchase the mp3 audio recordings and transcripts for each call.  This upgrade is completely optional and up to the individual registrant.

Essential Fatty Acids and ADHD
The studies on Essential Fatty Acid levels in Attention Deficit Disorder subjects vs. non- ADD ADHD subjects are interesting.

The ADD ADHD groups had significantly lower concentrations of key essential fatty acids than did the control groups, and about 40% of the ADD ADHD group showed these signs of EFA deficiency:

* increased thirst,
* frequent urination,
* dry skin,
* dry or brittle hair.

Low levels of Omega 6 EFAs contributed to higher incidents of illness (colds, flu, etc.), and deficits in Omega 3 EFAs contributed to problems with learning, behavior, sleep, and temper.

Teen Suicide Rates Increase as Prescriptions Decrease

A lot of teenagers, and even children, are prescribed antidepressants, somewhere from 1% to 1.5% of the population. At one point studies estimated that as many as 1.66% of children or adolescents were prescribed antidepressant medication, but after the FDA required a "black box" warning label for the medications in 2005, the prescription rate has dropped. The warning label states that the use of antidepressants among children and teenagers is associate with an increased risk of suicial thoughts, and suicial behaviors. So physicians have backed off of prescribing the medications.

However, the estimated suicide rate among American adolescents is about 16%.

So, as a result of fewer depressed teenagers receiving antidepressant treatment, the suicide rate among teenagers has gone up. See Hamilton B, et.al., Annual Summary of Vital Statistics: 2005. Pediatrics. Also see Greenhouse, J., et.al., Generalizing from Clinical Trial Data: A Case Study. The Risk of Suicidality Among Pediatric Antidepressant Users. Carnegie Mellon University.

Follow along with me here:

1. Antidepressants can increase suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children and adolescents who were not having any, or many, suicidal thoughts or behaviors, according to a study of 4,600 children and teens (and, by the way, no one in this group of 4,600 committed suicide). This was the basis of the FDA's black box warning label.
