When Rachel Holmes heard that she had been chosen as one of five winners of Wisconsin Public Radio's 2012 Neale
-Silva Young Artists' Competition, she was thrilled.  The vocalist, who has performed at New York's Carnegie Hall and on stages in China and Italy, had never performed on the radio before.  "Knowing that part of the prize was the chance to sing on WPR made me ecstatic," noted Holmes.

Holmes will perform works by Mozart, Verdi and others as part of the competition winners' recital at the Wisconsin Union Theater on the UW-Madison campus on Sunday, April 29 at 12:30pm.  The free public concert, which will be broadcast live statewide, will be followed by a reception with the performers.  No tickets or reservations are required, but attendees are encouraged to arrive early for the best seats.  Wisconsin Public Television will tape the concert for later broadcast on their Wisconsin Channel.

The Neale-Silva Young Artists' Competition was established to recognize young Wisconsin performers of classical music, ages 17 to 26, who demonstrate an exceptionally high level of artistry.  The competition and winners concert is made possible, in part, by a grant from the estate of the late UW-Madison professor Eduardo Neale-Silva.  A dedicated listener to WPR, he left a portion of his estate to help fund community outreach programs at the network.  Past winners have gone on to represent Wisconsin's classical music bona fides at conservatories and on stages around the world.

The Neale-Silva Young Artists' Competition Winners for 2012 include:
  • Cameron Pieper, piano, from Lawrence University
  • Chris Peck, cello, from UW-Madison
  • Rachel Holmes, voice, unaffiliated from Madison
  • Austin Larson, horn, from Neenah and currently studying at University of Cincinnati
  • Woodwind Quintet from Lawrence University with: Samuel Golter, flute; Kelsey Burk, oboe; Kinsey Fournier, clarinet; Emma Richart, horn; Jake Fisher, bassoon
The winners emerged from a competition held this spring at the UW-Madison.  Winners receive a cash prize, accommodations, a reception and the opportunity to perform in a live-broadcast concert.

Additional support for this year's contest and recital comes from the Wisconsin Union Theater, the UW-Madison School of Music, Sprint Print, HotelRED, Ward-Brodt, David R. Beatch and Carmen Mercedes Rigau.

Meet Our London Trip Winners

WPR England Prize Winners
Paul and Steph - winners of WPR's travel to England drawing - are long-time listeners and members.
Every once in while, Wisconsin Public Radio has an opportunity to provide listeners and donors with more than great news, information, education and entertainment.  As part of this spring's membership drive, WPR held a drawing (open to donors and non-donors alike) for this summer's Garden Tour of England with Larry Meiller.  We are pleased to announce that trip was won by long-time listeners and members Paul and Steph.

The couple are recent retirees who have never traveled to Europe.  Susannah Michaels, WPR's pledge drive manager, initially informed them of the prize via email and a message on their voice mail.  "I read the email first, but waited to listen to the voice mail message until Paul got home to see his reaction," noted Steph.  "He listened, gave me a dumbfounded, questioning look and then yelped with joy.  Rather than pinching himself, he continues to listen to the message again and again and again.  I am sure both the email and the voice mail message will not be erased or deleted for quite a while," she added.

Paul and Steph will join WPR host Larry Meiller and other members of our Hampton Court Flower Show tour to England, July 1 - 9.  Their prize includes airfare and the complete Earthbound Expeditions package.  The group will see the cathedrals at Leeds and Canterbury, visit the famous "White Garden" of Vita Sackville-West and Bateman's House and the wooded retreat of author Rudyard Kipling.  Plus, they'll spend an entire day exploring the grounds and exhibits of the Hampton Court Flower Show, the world's largest, run by the Royal Horticultural Society.

So, are Paul and Steph gardeners?  "To speak of ourselves as gardeners would certainly be grandiose," Steph said, but the couple are big fans of WPR and Larry Meiller.  "We've learned about everything from insects, wildlife, pet care, computer fixes, travel tips, science, and of course gardening, from his show," she said.  The pair enjoy WPR's Ideas Network programs and credit Joy Cardin's and Kevin McKinley's On Your Money segments for helping them develop their retirement strategy.  "We appreciate the in-depth, even-handed news coverage that is presented with very little ideological perspective or sensationalist spin.  We are so impressed by the quality of WPR programming and proud that public radio began in Wisconsin," Steph concluded.

This isn't the first time Steph has won a prize from WPR.  When she was in elementary school, a short story and a poem that she wrote was selected to be read on-air during the old School of the Air program, Let's Write

If you're interested in joining Paul, Steph and other WPR listeners on a garden tour of England with Larry Meiller, there are still a few slots available for purchase.  Find details at the link below.
