Crandall Heard

Crandall Heard

AADD is proud to welcome Crandall Heard to our team as Project Manager for the newly-created Justice and Developmental Disability Project. Crandall will be responsible for coordinating intensive training and education programs on disability issues in Georgia's justice system.

Prior to joining AADD, Crandall was a public defender for the Piedmont Circuit, which includes Barrow, Banks, and Jackson counties in Georgia. Heard's work as a public defender allowed him to gain fundamental insight and knowledge regarding the interactions of individuals with disabilities within the criminal justice system.  He also served his country as a commissioned officer in the United States Navy.

Crandall is what many call a "double dawg" in that he holds two degrees (a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Juris Doctorate) from the University of Georgia. He also is an avid sports fan and often volunteers his time coaching little league football. He is married to his law school sweetheart, Ashley. AADD looks forward to the exciting new work Crandall will bring to the Justice and Developmental Disabilities Project.

AADD To Be Cathedral Beneficiary

Cathedral Logo

The 41st Annual Cathedral Antiques Show, sponsored by the Episcopal Church Women of the Cathedral of St. Philip, has chosen AADD as its 2012 beneficiary, which involved a lengthy review process with a number of local non-profit organizations. Since its inception in 1969, The Cathedral Antiques Show has raised over three million dollars for local Atlanta charities.

The Cathedral Antiques Show brings together local, regional and national exhibitors offering a variety of beautiful 18th, 19th and early 20th century antiques. Among the items for sale are rugs, art, furniture, porcelain, silver and other collectibles. Throughout the Show, there are daily lectures on antiques and design, afternoon lunch and tea and a tour of some of the area's most gracious homes.

Past Cathedral Antiques Show beneficiaries have included H.E.R.O. for Children, a non-profit dedicated to improving the quality of life for children infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS; Soul Changers Women's House, a provider of recovery treatment and residential programs to indigent addicts and alcoholics; and The Georgia Justice Department, which works with juvenile offenders.

"We are honored to have been selected as the 2012 Cathedral Antiques Show beneficiary," said Dave Blanchard, executive director of AADD.  "This partnership will allow us to strengthen our support for family members who are incredibly vulnerable, while continuing our pioneering efforts in advocacy and community support for individuals living with developmental disabilities and their families."

Advocacy and Education

AADD Named Administrator of

Justice and Developmental Disabilities Project

AADD is excited to announce our new partnership with the Division of Developmental Disabilities to administer a Justice and Developmental Disabilities Project.  The project is a collaborative effort designed to train judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys and police officers to help them better understand people with developmental disabilities and how their lives connect with various aspects of the legal system.

DBHDD

A Justice and Developmental Disabilities Coalition will convene to support the long and short term goals of the project. The coalition will open a broader public discourse among stakeholders to recognize and address the multiple intersections of people with developmental disabilities within the legal and human resource systems. This project is funded by the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, Division of Developmental Disabilities and administered by AADD.

The Justice and Developmental Disabilities Project will be overseen by Rita Young, Director of Public Policy and

Education, and executed by Crandall Heard, Justice and Developmental Disabilities Project Manager.

Individual and Family Support

Outstanding Tri City High School Senior Needs Support

John*, a senior at Tri City High School, is an exceptional student and athlete. While most 18-year olds are worrying about what college to apply to, John is busy advocating for Jimmie*, his 15-year old brother living with developmental disabilities by attending AADD's Teen Group, modeling good behaviors and standing up for his brother when others tease him. In addition, John cares for his toddler twin sisters while his single mother, Stephanie*, receives dialysis treatments.

Stephanie became involved with AADD five years ago, when AADD helped her to find adequate housing; advocated for appropriate school supports and recreational opportunities; and assisted in paying utility bills to ensure the family had electricity, water, and heat. In addition, Shirley has participated in AADD's "Women Against Violence and Exploitation" and "Parenting" Support Groups.

Stephanie has fought to find consistent employment due to her dialysis, and it is a daily struggle to come up with the fees for John to participate in his senior activities and graduation. John has a lot more responsibility than your average 18-year old --

taking care of his three siblings when necessary, studying and playing sports.

Stephanie and John are just one example of how AADD provides support to the amazing individuals and families we serve every day.  If you would like to learn more about AADD's programs and how you can help Stephanie, John and other families like them, please visit our website at www.aadd.org/donate.

*To protect the identity of the individuals we serve, some of the names have been altered.
