Commencement 2011 - Thomas W. Harvey High School

In June, each member of the class of 2011 stepped off the stage, diploma in hand, and raised their eyes to acknowledge the parents, staff and friends attending the commencement ceremony at Thomas W. Harvey High School. Guests filled the bleachers and seats throughout the packed gymnasium to share in this milestone achievement and wish them well as the graduates stepped into their new role in society.

This coming Fall, 81% of the graduates will attend 2 or 4 -year colleges or technical schools.  Approximately 4% of the students have chosen to enlist in the military service and serve our country while others have chosen to enter the workforce. Some are still uncertain as to the path to follow; but all are anxious and ready for the new experiences awaiting them beyond the walls of Harvey High School.

During a special ceremony earlier in the week, students were recognized for their academic, athletic and personal achievement. Nineteen students shared in the local scholarship awards listed below. Those students, and many others, were also eligible to recieve financial assistance from their chosen colleges or universities .

We congratulate this talented class and wish them well in all their future ventures.

Harvey Students Attend National Leadership Conference

The Harvey Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Chapter has returned from the National Leadership Conference (NLC) held in Orlando, Florida last month.

Ten Harvey students, along with Chapter Adviser Nell Rapport, attended the conference. These students had placed in the top three in the state qualifying event this past spring, securing their right to compete at the National Conference.

The students competed in their FBLA events, attended workshops, state and regional caucusing meetings, heard keynote speakers and networked with other FBLA members from across the country. Although none of the Harvey students made it to the final round of competitions, they enjoyed many learning opportunities throughout the conference.

The trip was made possible through a grant from Avery Dennison Corporation which funded and supported the FBLA and Science Olympiad Programs this past year. Ms. Pat Brown of Avery Dennison also attended the NLC with the Harvey Chapter. She was recognized as one of the Business Persons of the Year by the National FBLA.

We congratulate these students and their advisors and mentors on a successful year of competition and thank Avery Dennison for their support.

Heritage Middle School Welcomes New Principal - Mr. Tim Oden

The Board of Education and administration welcomes Mr. Tim Oden as the new Principal of Heritage Middle School. He will fill the opening left by the resignation of Mr. Steve Ramos who has accepted a position with the Ohio Department of Education. Mr. Oden brings a wealth of education, leadership and teaching experience to the position.

Mr. Oden was most recently employed by the Barberton Local School District where he served as the Assistant Principal of Barberton High School and Principal of Barberton U.L. Light Middle School. Prior to that, he taught Marketing, Business, Computer classes and Web Design for 6 years at Beachwood High and Beachwood Middle Schools.  His lengthy list of professional achievements include: Presenter at the National Association of Secondary School Principals, President of Barberton Principals' Association, and presenter of testimony to the State of Ohio Finance Committee for retention of school funding for specialized school programs. In addition, he has developed and implemented intervention strategies for at-risk Special Education and regular education students.

Mr. Oden holds a Masters in Education, an Administrative License and a Comprehensive Business License from John Carroll University.

The district is please to have Mr. Oden join the staff of Painesville City Local Schools and looks forward to introducing him to the Heritage Middle School students and staff as we begin our new school year in August.
