Oceanside Anglers Club NewsletterApril 2011
OAC MEMBERS,

OAC First ThresherTuesday, May 3rd is just around the corner and your Oceanside Anglers Club is holding their meeting as scheduled. Luckily the Harbor doesn't schedule anything Tuesday nights or we could be bumped out of our meetings like we did with the shark tournament.

In case you didn't get the memo, our Thresher Shark Tournament scheduled for May 14th has been rescheduled to Saturday, May 21st due to a beach soccer event. Luckily we are easy going fisherman and a little thing like a schedule change doesn't affect us. I believe it wil turn out to be a good thing as it gives us another week for the threshers to get closer to Oceanside. We always worry if the Threshers are going to make it in time for our tournament.
I hope to see everyone this Tuesday, May 3rd at our meeting and May 21st, for our Thresher Shark Tournament.

May Speaker
Scott "Scootch" Aalbers, Research Biologist, USCG Captain
At next months meeting we will be hearing from Scott "scootch" Aalbers on the results of their tagging program for Threshers. Our club is a fishing club, yes we are holding a Thresher Shark Tournament, but we follow strict guidelines to do our best to keep the thresher shark fishery healthy. Thanks to the Pfleger institute for speaking to our club in years past about conservation, we now encourage our tournament anglers to do their best to mouth hook the sharks for easier release. Also we have a strict 100lb minimum and one fish maximum for a boated shark. After talking with Chugey with the Pfleger Institute, he believes our club is doing a great job on the conservation side, so Scott will concentrate on where and when these sharks swim based on results from their tagging program and research. It should make for an interesting meeting. Also bring your questions about Threshers as Scott will be able to answer a few questions from our members.

Donate your time to the club!
We are always looking for more help in the club. We need someone willing to be responsible for photos at our events and meetings, we need someone with the knowledge to  help our webmaster updating our website, We need more directors including President and Vice-President for next years election. Our club is only as good as our members, which is why we have a great club. If you have the ability and/or time please speak with me at our next meeting or email me and let me know how you would like to help out.

"NOT" the Winning Halibut

NOT THE WINNING HALIBUT
Well, if we had any pictures of our winning fish from the Halibut tournament, I would have put them in the spot above. BUT WE DON'T! Congratulations to the winning team, Team ONO with their  20.4lb Halibut.
But let this be a lesson to the next tournament winner, if you have your fish on the scale, and it is a winning fish, do not take it down until someone gets a picture of it. After you get a picture, send it to
and I will post it to the newsletter, Also I will try to get it in Western Outdoor News, and put it in The Crews News.

Heck if you are going to win the tournament you might as well get the fame with all the glory of cashing your check. That's half the fun of winning.
OAC MARINE
Master Gunnery Sergeant Michael Beard
I almost missed this one!
I am proud to have him as a club member and be associated with Master Gunnery Sergeant Michael Beard. He recently retired from the Marines on April 8th, 2011. He has accomplished so much in his career as a marine I don't have the space to list them all.
I did not want to miss the opportunity to say thank you for protecting us and dedicating most of his life to our country.

Mike, Now take some time and go fishing!

Boat Maintenance
Driscoll
Those of you that have larger boats docked in Oceanside have a problem when it comes to getting your boat hauled out and painted or other maintenance issues addressed. We all know that Oceanside has their own boat yard but is limited on the size of boat they are able to lift. When your boat weighs too much for Oceanside you have a choice to go North or South.
I recently hauled my boat at Driscoll Boat Works in Shelter Island.
As always once you haul a boat out you find more things to repair than you initially thought you had, but after dealing with Bill Campbell  I felt I received excellent work in a timely manner at a fair price. Bill was excellent to work with and kept the process moving quickly. He got me back in the water in time for our Halibut tournament as promised.
I would highly recommend them for your next boat yard when it is your time for a haul out.
