More evidence for Lifestyle and Cancer

book lifestyleNo doubt most of us would have seen the publicity behind Prof Max Parkins excellent study published this month. His epidemiological analysis suggests that 45% of cancer in men and 40% in women could be prevented by a healthy lifestyle. What was not mentioned, however, was the enormous evidence behind the benefits of lifestyle even after a diagnosis of cancer to reduce the risks of relapse and improving. This evidence was summarised in a Macmillan Cancer Support evidence review and forms the backbone behind the book - Lifestyle after Cancer - the facts.

wright foundationThe Wright Foundation, government recognised, qualification in cancer rehabilitation, featured in the last newsletter, has forged a successful new path for UK survivorship programmes. Following the completetion of the first five courses - dates have been booked for the next 6 months both in municipal and private gyms. This is a great step forward for cancer rehabilitation in the UK as gyms, who have an instructor with these level 4 skills, are now able to accept referrals on the nationall exercise referral scheme. Instructors with this qualification also have a another "quiver in their bow" and are able to take on private clients for individual rehab. The course welcomes gym instructors, other exercise professionals empowering them with a knowledge of what, what and how exercise is pivotal for cancer survivors - to sign up or read more about the course

green vegA major international study has confirmed a U-shaped distribution for the benefits of folate intake. The evaluation of the epic study published in The European Journal of Cancer showed that individuals with diets low in leafy green vegetables rich in folate, had a higher risk of cancer whilst those who took excessive supplements increased their risk. This confirmed two Scandanavian studies of folate acid supplementation described in detail in the vitamin section of Lifestyle after Cancer, which also showed an increased risk of cancer.  The most relaible way to ensure you have the correct level of micro-nutrients is to measure them - see online micro-nutrient testing.
