From the Lodge
This has been the summer of change at TWF. In addition to all the normal off-season planting and farm maintenance, we have been busy making a lot of changes. Im most proud that my wife, Debbie, has now joined us full time! Debbie will manage all things in the Lodge, as well as handle our back office work. She brings to us a wonderful touch and professionalism in the kitchen. When we started this venture back in 2005, many of you ate meals she prepared around the table in our home. Its only appropriate that we have come to have Debbie once again overseeing the fare in our Lodge. You'll see her around a lot, so welcome her to our team! Speaking of the Lodge, we are in the midst of a 2400 square foot addition. New sleeping quarters, entertainment area, and patio will change the landscape this fall. I can't wait for you to see it! And probably the most exciting news is our teaming with Summer Duck Farms to offer duck hunting as a combination hunt this winter. The folks at Summer Duck provide a great waterfowl experience. These hunts are limited in numbers, so call me today to reserve your spot for this exciting new experience at TWF. This opportunity is selling out already! We are less than 60 days from opening day! Start practicing on the clays courses and knock the rust off your shooting skills. You know how our birds fly! See you soon,
---Bill

What Others are Saying
It's such a pastoral idyll, a perfect little set piece of things reverential -- steeple and cross, wire grass and pines, dogs and double guns - that I hesitate for a moment to take int in. When the covey rises it comes as a complete surprise, despite the fact that I am wearing a bird vest and carrying a gun through some of the finest bird country I have ever seen. Debbie Webb Joins TWF A classically trained chef brings a new dimension to The Lodge
What happens when you combine a classically trained culinary chef with a traditional southern quail hunting preserve? Come to The Webb Farm and discover for yourself! Debbie Webb, Bill's wife has joined The Webb Farm as its Lodge director. "Im not sure neither I nor Bill really understood what we were getting into when I agreed to join the operations here," laughed Debbie. Debbie brings a wealth of experience to TWF. With a degree in Culinary Science and advanced course work from Sandhills Community College, the Santa Fe School of Cooking, and the prestigious Johnson and Wales University, Debbie has a deep background in food and entertainment. Among her many ventures, she was the owner and executive chef at Steeples in Hamlet, NC for 17 years, and the director of catering at North Carolina Motor
Speedway for 15 years. Most recently Debbie taught Culinary Science at Richmond Senior High School in Rockingham, until she retired this spring. "I love people; I love food; and combining the two to make smiles is what I love the most." Debbie's influence is already being seen around TWF. "One of the first things Bill and I decided to do was to add more sleeping rooms to the Lodge. We are seeing a trend of more interest in overnight accommodations at TWF and we are working to give our hunting guests additional choices and options -- both in food and lodging." The 2400 square foot Lodge expansion includes 4 additional rooms with private baths in a freestanding annex standing adjacent to the main building, expanded porches, new patio area, and an extended entertainment area. While Bill continues to oversee all aspects of the hunting operations, Debbie manages everything within the Lodge. "We have a great staff here at The Webb Farm and we love our guests. The hunters who come here, whether they have been here once, or nearly 40 times as one has, are all family to us. We want them to feel at home when they come though the gates. I guess its my southern heritage to make everyone feel like family," says Debbie. "I want to focus on food with a southern flair, taking advantage of as much of the locally grown and produced ingredients as possible. We live in such a rich community, our food should reflect that I think; a real celebration of the area." When we first opened The Webb Farm in 2005, I fed many of our guests around the dining room table in our home. With the building of the Lodge, and its current expansion, of course we've moved on from those days, but I still believe it is important to show our guests that its still all about home." With Debbie Webb managing the Lodge, you can bet that coming to The Webb Farm will provide you with many memorable experiences -- both in the field and around the table. |
Duck Hunting at Summer Duck Farm
Limited Quail and Duck Hunting Combos Available In addition to our traditional quail hunting, this season we are pleased to offer exclusive access to some of the finest duck hunting in the Southeast. Located just a 15 minute drive from The Webb Farm is Summer Duck Farm, the 1400 acre private estate of John R. Georgius. While Summer Duck Farm is well known for producing fine wines and being the home of Little River Vineyards (www.littleriverwines.com), Mr. Georgius has graciously allowed The Webb Farm to utilize his 80 acres of
private duck impoundments and facilities for the exclusive use of guests of The Webb Farm for the period immediately following Christmas until the end of the duck season. We will shoot the impoundments twice a week during this period, hunting groups of 8 hunters per hunt. We personally enjoy shooting Summer Duck starting about mid-afternoon till dusk. Mr. Georgius and his fine staff do an impressive job of management of the impoundments year round, from carefully choosing appropriate planting of the impoundments themselves to raising their own mallards onsite over the summer and fall months. The shooting is great and our guests are welcome to bring their own well behaved retrievers. At the end of the hunt, when the guns are put to case, Mr. Georgius has a tradition of coming down and joining the shooting party over cocktails to watch the thousands of ducks coming in to roost at dusk.
This is not just a special hunt, but a wonderful overall experience. Contact Bill ( bwebb@kitchinlaw.com) to book your combination hunt and for more details! |

TWF Lodge Expansion
New rooms means more overnight opportunities
One of the focal points of TWF is The Lodge. Our traditional Southern home has hosted many of our guests on overnight stays and all of our hunters have enjoyed the hearty fare around our family style table. When you arrive this season, you will immediately notice the Lodge has grown! We have added 2400 square feet to include 4 additional bedrooms with baths, an entertainment area, and an outdoor patio and fire pit for social gatherings after a day in the field. "The Lodge is a gathering place for our hunters and we wanted to expand the opportunity for more guests to experience The Webb Farm after the hunt," explained Debbie Webb. "The new space allows us to accommodate additional hunting parties, or bigger groups, now being able to have up to 11 overnight guests."

Guide Tips
Pre Season Training Your Gun Dog"You cannot imagine how really hot its been this summer," laughs Wade Meacham as he unloads his dogs after a long morning training session. Wade, TWF guide and owner of SunDog Kennels says this part of the year, sweat, heat and all, is the time to tune your dog up for the approaching season. "We are less than 60 days from opening day and if you haven't been training all summer, now is the time to start."
According to Wade, starting with just a little bit of training and conditioning this time of year is the way to start. "Be very aware of the heat. Dogs can over heat very quickly in this weather, but with a bit of caution and attention, you can get your dog in shape to hunt. Start with some easy exercise, short walks and throwing a bumper or tennis ball can get your dog moving in the right direction. If you have access to a pond and have a retriever, this is great weather to do some water drills and they love getting cool and wet. Ken Rabb works his lab in his backyard pool! The best time to work your dog is in the early morning hours before it gets hot, or late in the evening just before dark settles. Watch the temps, but you can find good times daily to train. The best thing to remember is to get your dog moving! October when we are in the field is not the time to think about training." One could add that this is good advice for hunters too! For a good article on preseason training, check out more advice from the professionals at Gun Dog Magazine. http://www.gundogmag.com/2011/06/20/pre-hunt-gun-dog-training/ And in a late update, SunDog Kennels has a new litter of Irish Lab puppies. Finn has been working this off season! If you are interested in reserving one of these outstanding Irish Labs, contact Wade Meacham at 910-206-5987.

The Final Shot
Did you see us in Garden & Gun Magazine?
The August/September issue featured a story and photo essay on The Webb Farm, penned by famed outdoor writer Eddie Nickens. Eddie came and hunted with Bill and Wade in the late season and experienced one of the best days of the year. To read our story, pick up a copy of G&G at most finer grocery stores or magazine shops.
Bill told you about changes at TWF. One additional change you will be seeing soon is a new website. We are working on it now and will launch it in early September. The new site will be more reflective of The Webb Farm experience and show off all that we have to offer. One of the most exciting new features will be a calendar so you can see what dates are available when planning your hunt with us. Additionally, you will be able to see the current issue of Covey Call, as well as browse through the newsletter archive for back issues. We are planning a Scenes page, where we will upload weekly photos and notes from the Farm so you won't miss any action. A traditional southern quail hunting farm with a modern, technology-driven web presence; what would Bill's dad Ralph and Uncle Elsie think! Well its almost time to get out the double guns, lace up the boots, and strap on the dog collars, so we'll be seeing you soon!
