Off Season Work
A bird dog in Manhattan?
An Adventure of a Lifetime
From the Lodge

March 31 brought the end to our season, with Bobby Martin and friends from the Farmville, Virginia area getting in the last day of hunting, dodging rain all around us and bagging  over 300 birds!  The staff consensus here was that this was our smoothest season ever, as we made adjustments and tweaks to make your stay with us more comfortable and memorable.

While controlled burns have already started, and the tractors and discs have been working almost every field and small patch here, we are hard at work on more long range planning for the Farm.

Our architect is drawing a beautiful 4 bedroom addition to the Lodge, so that we can accommodate a party of 8 with each having their own private bedroom and bath.,It will give  us a lot more flexibility for your groups, and let everyone spread out more. Could a fire pit and new patio be far behind?  Stay tuned.

We are preparing to offer some of the finest  duck hunting in North Carolina for your enjoyment, as we have worked out an arrangement with a private estate only 6 miles away to allow us access to 80 acres of beautiful impoundments that hold thousands of ducks! We will offer waterfowling from Christmas till the end of the duck season. This will be really special folks., as we will probably offer a half day quail hunt, with an afternoon duck hunt. Maybe a steamed oyster/shrimp boil to end the day!

And this year, for the first time ever, we will kick off the Fall with a traditional Labor Day Dove Hunt. Within two weeks the sunflowers and millet will begin going in the ground to create a smorgasbord for the doves!

However,I think the best news for everyone, including me, is that my wife Debbie will be stepping down from her position as Culinary Arts Instructor at Richmond Senior High School so that she can devote all of her energy and skills to manage the day to day operations at the Lodge. While Cynthia and Vicki do an outstanding  job for us, Debbie will bring an attention to detail , more great variations  in table fare, and personal attention to your requests to make your visit here complete. She will kick us up a notch or two, and allow me to delegate to her some day to day business duties I've dealt with for years. I am really excited to get Debbie's complete focus this Fall. There are so many positive intangibles here for us all!

We will talk again later in the Summer as things take better shape. In the meantime, I just want to express my personal gratitude on behalf of my family and staff for your support. We cherish our relationships with each and every one of you.

Have a great summer!

Bill

"Webb uses a wide variety of traditional and innovative farming practices and has created a venue where hunters can experience a quail hunt that is every bit as traditional as when the farm was founded."

Bird Hunter Report

Seems we are making news!  The Bird Hunter Report included a most favorable review of our Farm in its March Tom KeerIssue (www.birdhuntingreport.com).  "The 1,200 acre property is one that discerning quail hunters instantly recognize as quail Valhalla," they report.  Tom Keer, the writer, spent a few great days with us this year hunting with his setters Rowdy and Ocracoke.  While Tom was born and raised in New England, we have proclaimed him the most "Southern Yankee we have ever met," a moniker he gladly accepts!

Garden & Gun Magazine

One of our favorite lifestyle magazines, Garden & Gun (www.gardenandgun.com) will feature

Gun & Garden Photo Shoot

The Webb Farm in its fall (October) issue.  Seasoned outdoor  writer Eddie Nickens spent a day hunting  with us this season  to gather information for his story.  Many of you know Eddie from his work in Field and Stream, National Geographic, and Men's Journal.  G&G's photographer, Stacey Haines said she had never tried to 'shoot something so fast!'  Many of hunters' have uttered the same words!  Be sure to look for us in G&G this fall!

Off Season Work
Train your dog this summer so you can hunt when the season begins!

If you have a gun dog, now is the time to begin your training routines for next season.  Don't let your dog lay around all spring and summer and expect it to perform next hunting season.  Your dog is an athlete and should be treated as one!  According to Wade Meacham of SunDog Kennels, spring is the perfect time to start training for next season.  "The weather is pretty nice this time of year and your dog is probably still in good shape from last season, so take advantage and get him or her out in the field!"

You can keep a gun dog in shape with only a few minutes of work a day.  "People think they do not have time to

work their dogs to keep them in shape, but in reality, it only takes a little bit of time.  Get your dog out of the kennel, or off the sofa and take him for a run or walk daily.

Wade training 1

Take him to the  yard and throw a ball or bumper to work on retrieving.  If nothing else, get him out and simple play with him!  You are building bonding time with your hunting buddy as well as providing him with much needed physical activity."

According to Wade, the off season is the perfect time to work on fine tuning the skills your dog will need for hunting season.  "Everyone's gun dog should adhere to basic commands whether in the field or playing in the back yard.  Teach your dog the basic commands of come, sit, heel, fetch (back) and give.  If they have a good grasp of those, your hunting experience will be much more pleasurable.  No one likes to hunt with an unruly dog.  Besides, teaching your dog basic commands builds trust and bonds you with him!"

Every one can work with their dog on the basics.  For more advanced work you might want to look into sending your dog to Wade training 2a professional trainer.  "I have dogs at SunDog Kennels in every stage of training, from basic obedience to advanced gun dog.  We specialize in retriever and upland gun dog training, and I always have a few simple pets in for owners who are looking for a better behaved family member!"

If you need an assessment on your dog from Wade, contact him today.  He will put you on the right path for training your hunting buddy!

A bird dog in Manhattan?
Kurt Beyer takes training dedication to a new level!

Many of you have heard this story before, but it is worth telling again!  For several seasons now, we have had a guest hunt with us who lives in Manhattan.  Kurt Beyer, an Iowa boy who grew up and moved east for school and work, now makes his home in New York City.  Kurt hunted the wide open spaces of the midwest before coming east.  Several years ago he decided to invest in a couple of bird dogs for himself and picked two fine Elhew pointers from Brian Hays at Chokebore Kennels.  For those of you who know bird dog breeding, the Elhew line of pointers are some of the finest in the world.

But many people have fine bird dogs.  What makes this story unique, if not remarkable is that Kurt's dogs live with him in Manhattan and he works and trains them in Central and Riverside Parks there in the city!  Kurt Beyer and MemphisCan you imagine training a bird dog in the midst of millions of people?  Well Kurt does a fine job in that environment with Boone and Memphis.  He has even managed to find a source where he can pick up a couple live birds to place for this pointers to work with!  Now that is dedication to one's craft!

Kurt must enjoy his hunting, because during the season, you can find him, Boone, and Memphis headed out to hunt somewhere across America.  We are lucky he found The Webb Farm and has quickly become a part of our family!
