Watch this newsletter and the ACSSW website in the near future for a Call for Proposals for the National School Social Work Research Summit to be held in late June.  This is an opportunity to (1) learn about current research as applied to practice, (2) become familiar with research models you can apply in your setting and practice, and (3) showcase your projects to colleagues.  Further details are pending.

ACSSW is also in the process of developing a document on The Role of the School Social Worker.  With the changing role of our profession it is essential to provide an updated description of the profession to those who might be interested or have a "need to know."  ACSSW welcomes your help and suggestions.

Lastly, but definitely not least, ACSSW is in the early stages of establishing a Center for School Social Work Research.  This was the task assigned by participants of the June 2010 National School Social Work Research Summit.  While other organizations have been invited to collaborate on these tasks, ACSSW believes that members have much to contribute to both projects.  If you are interested in participating, just send an email to me at the address below.

practiceAARP Offers Database of Support for Kin Caregivers

A new online database can help grandparents and other relatives raising kin children to find support and services. The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Foundation has launched the Grandcare Support Locator, which allows kinship caregivers to search for specific types of groups and services within their State or jurisdiction. Using the online search form, users can search within their zip code to find services (e.g., child care, health care, respite care, newsletters) or support groups (in-person, telephone support, or online). Users can limit the search to Spanish- or English-language results, and they can restrict the search to items relevant to grandparents raising grandchildren or to grandparents experiencing visitation issues.  Click here to read more.

researchTier 2 Behavioral Interventions for At-Risk Students

Positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based,
school-wide approach for promoting socially appropriate behavior among students and creating safe, effective learning environments. Schools implementing PBIS create uniform behavior expectations for all classrooms and building locations, develop systematic procedures for teaching and reinforcing expectations for students and staff, and utilize school teams that employ data-based decision-making to guide implementation (Sugai & Horner, 2002). Schools implementing PBIS with fidelity have reported reductions in discipline referrals, decreased amounts of administrative time devoted to addressing problem behavior, and improved positive school
climates (Carr et al., 2002; Horner et al., 2004; Irvin et al., 2006; Irvin, Tobin, Sprague, Sugai, & Vincent, 2004; Lewis & Sugai, 1999; Luiselli, Putnam, & Sunderland, 2002; Scott, 2001; Scott & Barrett, 2004; Sugai et al., 1999; Sugai, Sprague, Horner, & Walker, 2000; Sugai et al., 2000; Sugai & Horner, 2002). These findings suggest that PBIS is an effective behavior intervention.  Link to web source.
