Invite: LGBTQ Youth in the Schools

LGBTQ Youth in the Schools
March 8, 2012
 CLE Program: 6:30-8:30pm | Reception: 8:30pm
White & Case LLP, 1155 Avenue of the Americas (29th Floor)

Despite several victories on the marriage equality front and other recent advances, the issues facing LGBTQ youth in the schools remain significant. In part due to tragic events involving younger members of the LGBTQ community, there has been increased public awareness of the harassment, bullying and discrimination frequently encountered by LGBTQ youth within the schools as well as cyberbullying and other forms of harassment experienced outside the classroom.

This CLE program will provide an overview of some of the key judicial rulings and statutes relevant to addressing the problem - Federal constitutional protections,  Title IX,  the Dignity for All Students Act (being implemented in New York in 2012) & beyond - and discuss the hurdles to legal efforts aimed at improving the lives of LGBTQ students. The panel will also explore some of the unique concerns and challenges facing transgender youth.

Finally, the program will highlight some of the efforts beyond the courtroom being undertaken to ensure a safer and more welcoming school environment for LGBTQ youth.

The CLE Panel will include the following participants*:

Matthew Faiella -  Staff Attorney, United States Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights Law.

Melissa Goodman - Senior Litigation and Policy Counsel, New York Civil Liberties Union.

Hayley Gorenberg
- Deputy Legal Director, Lambda Legal

Ronald Scott -  Staff Attorney, United States Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights

* Moderated by Brad Snyder - Executive Director, LeGaL - The LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York
