2011 was a year of significant legislative achievements, with marriage equality legislated in New York, continuing developments in the litigation attempting to reinstate marriage equality in California (the Prop 8 lawsuit), and implementation of the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" Repeal Act of 2010 becoming final in September, allowing lesbians, gay men and bisexuals to serve openly in the military. There were also advances in the courts, especially in LGBT family law and growing protection for transgender people under sex discrimination laws and the Constitution. The second annual LGBT Law Year in Review program will discuss the key federal and state court decisions and legislative developments of the past year, with some glimpses of what we might expect in 2012.
