December 13, 2011 -- LeGaL is pleased to announce that the New York Community Trust has awarded the LeGaL Foundation a $40,000 grant to strengthen and expand the organization's legal clinics and services for LGBT community members of modest means.
The grant, which will be provided for use in 2012, will assist LeGaL with planned expansion of its existing clinic in Manhattan and into additional locations. The funds will also be used to assist with the development of topic-specific clinics in high priority legal areas to continue meeting the diverse needs of the LGBT community.
"We are thrilled to be receiving this generous support at a time when the legal challenges facing our community continue to be significant," said Brad Snyder, LeGaL's Executive Director. He added that the grant will help LeGaL further expand its volunteer network of attorneys and law firms who have provided critical pro bono and financial support over the years.
"We look forward to using these funds to better serve members of the LGBT community in need of legal assistance, " said LeGaL President Carlene Jadusingh. "We are so thankful to The New York Community Trust for this generous grant."
LeGaL's Manhattan weekly clinic, which recently marked the kickoff to its 25th year of operation, has served more than 10,000 visitors over the years and perhaps as many as 12,000 community members. In addition to the Manhattan weekly clinic, the organization also holds a monthly clinic on Long Island and an LGBT Life Planning Clinic in partnership with NYLAG's LGBT Law Project.
