LeGaL Organizational News.  Members in good standing recently voted to approve changing the name of the organization to "LeGaL - The LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York" along with amendments to the organization's bylaws.  Thanks to all those who participated.  We'll be rolling out the new name and some related enhancements to our website and beyond in the months ahead!  Additionally, lawyer members up-to-date on dues will soon receive additional information relating to the process for making nominations to the LeGaL Board of Directors along with details relating to LeGaL's Annual Meeting, which will be held at the end of October.  Please take a moment to renew your membership today; to check on your membership status e-mail info@le-gal.org.     

 

Survey by Mayor's Advisory Committee on the Judiciary.  The Mayor's Advisory Committee on the Judiciary, which is required to make recommendations to the Mayor regarding the qualifications of incumbent judges for reappointment to the Criminal, Family and Interim Civil Court, seeks input from LeGaL members and other bar associations with respect to their experiences with such judges. Did you know?  The State's Department of Taxation & Finance has posted initial guidance, available here, relating to the effect of the recently enacted Marriage Equality Act.   This link has been added to the new online LGBT Legal Resource Center housed on LeGaL's website, which seeks to be a home for many of the LGBT community's publicly available legal resources with a special emphasis on the New York area.

This Panel Presentation & Networking Reception was sponsored by LeGaL's In-House Corporate Counsel Committee and generously hosted by BNP Paribas.  A panel of in-house lawyers discussed the advantages and disadvantages of practicing in a corporate legal department, pathways to get there, the pros and cons of being Out in a corporate environment and ways that in-house LGBT lawyers can use their role to advance our community's interests. Panelists included John Myung of Prudential International Insurance; Marla Hassner of UBS; Sheila E. Carson of JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A., Nancy Louden, of Estee Lauder Inc., John Genovese of MetLife, and Matthew Merrick, Chair of LeGaL's In-House Corporate Counsel Committee.

On June 23, 2011 LeGaL held a Pride event, hosted by Morrison & Foerster, which honored the judges and judicial officers of the LGBT community and commemorated the 15th Anniversary of the Dr. M.L. "Hank" Henry, Jr., Fund for Judicial Internships.

City Bar Pride Reception 

June 13, 2011  

 

On June 13, 2011 LeGaL was proud to serve as a co-sponsor of the New York City Bar Association's annual reception and cocktail party celebrating LGBT Pride Month 2011 where LeGaL Founder Arthur S. Leonard and Jennifer L. Colyer, were honored for their significant contributions to the LGBT communities.  The committee also announced that the awards will be renamed in honor of Art Leonard. Congrats, Art!

LeGaL President Carlene Jadusingh Participates in MetLife's Panel on the Economic Impact of Marriage Equality.  In late June, President Carlene Jadusingh (pictured below) served as a panelist at a discussion & reception hosted by MetLife, entitled "The Economic Impact of Marriage Equality."  CJ joined with panelists from MetLife, SAGE, ESPA, the NGLCC and the New York Times for this timely event.
