Dear LeGaL Members & Friends,
First, Happy Pride Month! LeGaL's full listing of Pride-related activities will be sent shortly and I hope you will join with us for many of them.
Second, I am writing separately to invite you to a special Pride event celebrating 15 Years of LeGaL's Dr. M.L. Hank Henry Jr. Judicial Internship Program as well as the judges and judicial officers of our community who are the greatest tribute to Hank's enduring legacy.
As you may know, The Fund for Judicial Internships was established in memory of Dr. Henry whose groundbreaking work as the Executive Director of the Fund for Modern Courts was instrumental in ensuring that openly LGBT candidates were considered for judicial positions. In the early 1980's, Hank was at the forefront advocating for the election and appointment of members of our community.
To honor that vision and continue his legacy, each summer the internship program places 1-2 law students with a demonstrated commitment to LGBT equality with judges from our community in various courts and tribunals. Each year, law students from across the country apply for these positions.
As we commemorate the 15th anniversary, we are also hoping to use the occasion to expand on the current program and promote greater awareness of the work that needs to be done to fulfill Hank's vision of a truly diverse judiciary.
Over the years, the program has received generous support from individuals like you along with sponsorship from MetLife Legal Affairs, City Council Speaker Quinn and others.
