FamilySearch Center Designation

FamilySearch Designation

SCGS received official designation as a FamilySearch center in July 2008. The designation allows the society to rent films from the LDS Library in Utah on behalf of SCGS patrons.

After a patron rents and renews the item for a two more rental periods, it is retained at the SCGS Library and is placed on indefinite loan. Items on indefinite loan are available for any patron visiting the SCGS Library. The rental program is open to the public  as well as members of the Society.

French-Canadian Heritage Society of California, which is affiliated with SCGS, is working to build a strong collection of French films that will remain on indefinite loan at the SCGS Library. If you would like to donate to help build that collection, you can use the form below.

Microfilm rental costs $6 per rental period and an indefinite loan film  will cost a total of $18.

Patrons can order the films by mail  (enclose a check made payable to SCGS) and by phone using your credit card. Search the FamilySearch catalog to locate the appropriate film number and be sure to include that number in your order.

Films must be used at the SCGS Library and cannot be removed from the premises.

Hats off to Board member Joan Phillips for overseeing this valuable service for our members and guests.

Welcome New Members!
SCGS typically sees a notable increase in membership in relation to Jamboree. However, this year was exceptional.  A total of 226 new memberships were recorded in conjunction with a Jamboree registration.  We give all of our new members a Hearty WELCOME.  We hope to see you in the library very soon.

4th of July Hours
4th of July
The SCGS Library will be closed Saturday, Sunday, and Monday for the Independence Day Holiday.  On behalf of the board of directors, officers and volunteers, we wish everyone a bang-up 4th!

New Microfilm Equipment
The new microfilm reader / printer has arrived and will be up and ready to use by mid-July. It's a long-awaited addition to our equipment and one that will enrich our patrons' use of the SCGS Library. The reader / printer is an excellent complement to the services that SCGS can provide through its designation as a FamilySearch Center (see featured article, left).  We are accepting donations toward the purchase of another reader / printer system ($4,995 plus computer and monitor). If you would like to support this effort, you can donate online, or you can use the form below and designate your donation for the "Microfilm/Microfiche Scanner purchase."

Jamboree Program
Record-Breaking Jamboree
It was another outstanding three days in Burbank.  By the time we turned out the lights on the 2010 Jamboree, we had broken records for:
...the number of attendees (1724)
...the number of Ancestry scanning patrons (219)
...the number of documents scanned (22,789)
...the number of genea-bloggers under one roof (48)
...the value of door prizes (over $18,000)
...and the most frigid genealogical lecture venue ever (the Pavilion / tent). (It wasn't intentional and we apologize.)
96%  is the most satisfying number, however.
It comes from the post-Jamboree survey that was completed by over 475 Jamboree attendees, including participants, exhibitors, speakers and volunteers:  It's the percentage survey respondents who answered Outstanding, Excellent or Very Good to this question:

"Overall, how would you describe the 41st Annual Southern California Genealogy Jamboree? Would you say it was:

The Jamboree photo album is posted online at Flickr.com.  If you would like to add your Jamboree photos to the collection, feel free to do so.

V-Jam Lives On
Did you know there was a Virtual Jamboree in addition to the one inside the Burbank Marriott?  There were so many blogger posts and tweets that a Jamboree Twitter Archive was created to capture the event.  Thanks to Taneya Koonce, V-Jam will live on at  http://twapperkeeper.com/hashtag/scgs10

Jamboree Session Recordings Available
JAMB-Inc., the supplier who recorded several sessions at Jamboree, has posted their CD-ordering website at JAMB-inc.  SCGS is not involved in the sale of these CDs so please contact Jim Pashia directly at his website if you have any questions or to order one or more CDs.

Syllabus Copies Still Available
Print and CD copies of the Jamboree syllabus are available for purchase at the SCGS website.  The printed syllabus is $20; the CD version is $10.  The CD version requires Adobe Reader and is fully searchable. Quantities are limited so act quickly. Buy yours at the SCGS Library or order online.
