Reception & Book Signing

Free & Open to the Public

Every August the GGRWHC celebrates the anniversary Buttonsof the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment granting universal suffrage in 1920, and we honor the heirs of the courageous and persistent campaigners during that 72-year effort. Michigan political icon Elly Peterson is prominent among them. On August 25th we partner with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum to sponsor an evening with Sara Fitzgerald, author of a new biography: Elly Peterson: Mother of the Moderates.

Fitzgerald's new biography finally gives full credit to one of the first female political leaders in this country. During a reception after the program, Fitzgerald (herself a Michigan native and former Washington Post editor)will sign copies of the new book, available for sale at the Ford gift shop. See our website for fuller information: www.ggrwhc.org

See the following recent review and blog posting on the importance of Fitzgerald's new book:
Author saves historic figure in women's fight for equality from the dust bin.
("New book allows Elly Peterson to stand with the giants of the women's movement.")

Elly Peterson and the Republican Party | DomeMagazine.com

("Sara Fitzgerald's new biography of political trailblazer Elly Peterson focuses on the Michigan leader's historic rise within the Republican Party and her eventual high-profile split with the GOP in the 1970s over women's issues." And "The book is also an intense but subtle examination of the cultural milieu of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s and the emergence of women's issues, all against the backdrop of a political world.")

Join us! BOOK TV will tape our Equality Day program for national distribution!

Stay tuned: You'll be hearing more about the inductioLipczynskin of Grand Rapids' Valeria Lipczynski into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame. Lipczynski shook up the place after she emigrated from Poland in 1869, helping other Polish families moving to Grand Rapids, aiding her homeland during World War I, and working for women's rights in the Polish National Alliance.
