Living the LEGACY Continue the Celebration of Women's History this Equality Day |
Greetings!
History or Hollywood?
Screen Iron-Jawed Angels and determine for yourself! Thursday, August 26, Equality Day Celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment, granting women full voting rights, at the movies! The GGRWHC is pleased to sponsor a special showing of Iron-Jawed Angels, a 2004 HBO account of the late suffrage movement. The film stars Hilary Swank, Anjelica Huston, and Frances O'Connor and emphasizes the radical side of the movement during the last eight years before 1920. After the showing, Calvin College historian Kristin Du Mez will help us sort out factual history from dramatic Hollywood. Gather in the reception area outside of Loosemore Auditorium before the film to engage with "suffragists" and view historical displays about the later years of the suffrage movement right here in Grand Rapids. Bring your cameras and pose with a "Votes for Women" banner, purple sash, and pennant provided by the Grand Rapids Public Library--and recently sported by volunteers walking in the Hollyhock Lane Fourth of July Parade. On display will be photographs from a Grand Rapids parade in 1910 showing men marching with the women. If you like, dress in something that looks vintage: for women, high-collar white blouse, a white or black skirt, and a hat (nice, but not necessary--you can borrow from us); for men, a suit or white shirt and tie. The film will illustrate that despite predictable tensions, the suffrage movement involved women and men from varied races and classes. The theater (located in the DeVos Center at 136 DEV) has comfortable cushioned seats and a big screen for your viewing pleasure (since the movie was originally shown via televised HBO, we're thrilled to see it larger than life on a theater screen this time!). GVSU will not be in session yet, so parking will be easy. Our thanks to the Provost's Office at Grand Valley State University, Cindy Laug from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the anonymous donor of popcorn and pop! See you at the movie! |
