LEGACY Lookout - Week 3
LEGACY 2010 Celebrates Women's History Month in Grand Rapids
Greetings!

We're Midway through a Marvelous March -- we hope you've had a chance to take in some of the wonderful programs -- and plan to join us for several more!

Coordinated by the Greater Grand Rapids Women's History Council, an alphabet soup of organizations have planned LEGACY activities showcasing the many hats worn over time by Grand Rapids women. Study the calendar below (and at www.ggrwhc.org) to solve the puzzle of programming offered by the NBPW, AAUW, WCC, WRC, PWA, and GRPL--besides the historical organizations: GGRWHC, GRHS, and GRHC. Don't forget our virtual programming on GRTV, WGVU, WYCE, as well as links to podcasts and photo essays on the GRHC website, www.historygrandrapids.org. And then we're on Facebook and Twitter, too. All this in just one week!

During Week 3 of "Women at Work and Play in West Michigan" the emphasis will be on "play." At 7PM Thursday at the Ford our series on area women's history features Kim D. Rush's program on 1950s Grand Rapids women on the local blues scene. Singers Eddie Ingram, Mona Sallie, and Roberta Bradley plan to attend the debut of Rush's video presentation of documents, testimonials, pictures--and of course some blues!  This program was previewed in a Sunday Grand Rapids Press story - check it out!

Search the calendar for more information on African American women at work in Grand Rapids. At a Saturday lunch, join the NBPW for an introduction to descendants of Sojourner Truth--in preparation for a program next week at the GRPL on Truth, a nineteenth-century political dynamo. Find Hattie Beverly and Thelma Estelle Garnet in virtual histories online.

Then, continuing the theme of women working in the field of music, check out Wednesday's WYCE broadcast about local composer Dolores Hruby and Gil Davis's photo essay on opera-singing businesswomen touring through Grand Rapids in the nineteenth century. Begin the week, Monday evening with a double-feature on GRTV. The late Norma Brink stars as Susan B. Anthony in "Grand Rapids on the Road to Women's Suffrage." Spend Tuesday evening at the GRPL with Pat Bravender and Nancy Drew, and spend Friday with Rosemary Johnsen on when "feminism" became the new "F" word. In between, have lunch at the WRC Pillar Awards and the WCC; then have a glass of wine with PWA and meet the state directors of the ACLU and Planned Parenthood and Senator Gretchen Whitmer.

What a week! Get the details below . . . And don't forget to reserve for the FINALE reception on March 31st!

CORRECTED BELOW-- NEW calendar:
Correction to the online calendar: GRTV program NOT SATURDAY, "the 15th," BUT MONDAY, March 15 -- PLUS: GRTV is currently only available on Comcast Cable. It won't air on AT&T U-Verse for a few months.

Giving Up the Blues for Gospel: The Story of Women Blues Singers in Grand Rapids
Hard to find in Grand Rapids, our women blues singers have nevertheless made a colorful group. Uncover the blues scene here when Kim Rush uses the experience of Sippie Wallace to set the context for 1950s and 1960s area women who also tended to move away from singing the "devil's music" (at the Horseshoe Bar on Grandville SW) toward singing gospel at church. Rush has uncovered and documented the stories of Eddie Ingram, Mona Sallie, Roberta Bradley, and a few surprising others through filmed oral histories. Taking a period look at a Grand Rapids blues scene thriving in the African American community, Rush will give us a front seat for pictures, documents, testimonials--and of course some blues! Several performers plan to attend.
