LEGACY 2010 Celebrates Women's History Month in Grand Rapids
Greetings!

Wearing Different Hats: Women at Work and Play in West Michigan is the theme for our community celebration of women's history this year. Based on the lineup of intriguing presentations we have planned, we think you'll agree that those hats are as varied as the amazing women who wore them!

Coordinated by the Greater Grand Rapids Women's History Council, many organizations have planned LEGACY activities that showcase the many hats worn over time by Grand Rapids women. In fact, the GRPL exhibit on local women's history literally features a few hats!

Following is a complete calendar of events for the month-long celebration. Please watch weekly during March for updates and alerts to be delivered on Sundays to your email box, or visit our web site for more information.

More than anything, help us share the excitement of this LEGACY celebration by attending as many events as possible, and spreading the word to your friends and colleagues. This newsletter has a forward feature, please use it to share with everyone in your address book!

Unique to our 2010 celebration, the Greater Grand Rapids Women's History Council is co-sponsoring several cornerstone events.
  • Saturday, March 6 - 10:00 am - Grand Rapids Public Library downtown branch - Legacy Landmarks: Walking with Women Who Left their Mark on Grand Rapids - Marcie Beck will introduce this self-guided tour of downtown women's historical landmarks. We'll have the brochure and map on our web site very soon -- check back!
  • Wednesday, March 31 - 5-7 pm - Women's City Club - Climbing the Hill: 150 Years of Women Physicians in Grand Rapids. The LEGACY 2010 finale event features a wine and appetizer reception followed by presentations regarding the role of West Michigan women in medicine both historically and today.  Featured speakers are Dr. Marsha Rappley, Dean of Michigan State University School of Human Medicine and Jo Ellyn Clarey, Greater Grand Rapids Women's History Council researcher and historian. Join us for this intriguing presentation, as well as the opportunity to celebrate all of the amazing women we've encountered during LEGACY presentations and activities in 2010!
  • Thursdays at the Ford: A Series on Women's History. Co-sponsored with the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, the Grand Rapids Historical Commission, and the Grand Rapids Historical Society. Every Thursday evening in March we'll tip our hats to some of our community's most interesting historical women and learn about how they made their marks on West Michigan. (See the calendar for specific programming.)

We're looking forward to seeing you at the LEGACY programs very soon!
