OPEN YOUR HEART YOGA
By Ronie Shilo, NoXcuses Yoga Specialist

Open Your Heart Yoga Class

Backbends are a fundamental part of any yoga practice, but they are especially relevant to anyone thinking about matters of the heart. However, the name backbend is a bit misleading. For in fact, when properly done, backbends are not about our backs at all, they are about our chests and hearts. In every backbend (bridge, wheel, camel, or upward facing dog) we focus on inhaling, lifting and elongating our upper backs, rolling our shoulders back, and opening our chests and hearts. When we open our hearts, we open ourselves to possibility and adventure, we build courage and stamina, and receive the sort of energy that propels us to seek the presence of others. As we spend most of our life bending forward, driving, working at our computers, and slouching on chairs, backbends teach our body to assume the opposite position and eventually help us to strengthen our spine and re-align it in a neutral position.

Another element that is often overlooked in backbends is the role that our feet and legs play in these challenging poses. So many of the backbends would not be possible if it weren't for the determined rooting down of our feet onto the mat, and the strength and activation of our thigh and calf muscles. While it is the opening of our chests and hearts that allows our thoracic spine to release, it is the activation of our leg muscles that creates the curvature in our lumbar spine.

And perhaps, the connection between the strong feet on the ground and the opening in the heart can be insightful when thinking about relationships with loved ones. If we just open our hearts without having the steadying and balancing presence of our feet on the ground, we might be carried away too easily by our emotions, and fall in and out of love all too often. If we have our feet grounded so well that they leave no room for spaciousness and opening, we will be too heavy and tied down to let our hearts be free to love and be loved. It is the fine balance between our open hearts and our rooting feet that help us create a healthy and sustainable backbend practice. And sometimes I think it is the same balance that helps us generate loving relationships with the people around us.

Warm Winter Salad for Two

    warm winter salad

Sautéed radicchio, fennel and carrots are topped with chicken, walnuts and Gorgonzola in this warm and hearty main-dish salad. Serve with crusty whole-grain baguette.

Ingredients

8 ounces boneless, skinless chicken breast, trimmed of fat

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

1 pear, sliced

1 small shallot, minced

3 tablespoons sherry vinegar

2 teaspoons Dijon mustard

1 small head radicchio, thinly sliced

1 small fennel bulb, cored and thinly sliced

1 large carrot, cut into matchsticks

1 tablespoon chopped walnuts, toasted

1/8 teaspoon salt, or to taste

1/8 teaspoon freshly ground pepper, or to taste

6 large butter lettuce leaves

1/4 cup crumbled Gorgonzola, or goat cheese

Preparation

1. Poach chicken (see Tip). Use 2 forks to shred into bite-size pieces.

2. Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add pears and cook, stirring occasionally, until they start to brown, about 2 minutes. Transfer to a small bowl.

3. Whisk shallot, vinegar and mustard in a small bowl; add to the pan and cook, stirring constantly, for 30 seconds. Add the cooked chicken, radicchio, fennel, carrot and walnuts. Cook, stirring occasionally, until just wilted, about 3 minutes. Return the pears to the pan. Season with salt and pepper.

4. Divide lettuce leaves between 2 plates. Top with the warm chicken salad and sprinkle with cheese.

Tips & Notes

To toast chopped walnuts, cook in a small dry skillet over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until fragrant and lightly browned, 2 to 4 minutes.

To poach chicken, place boneless, skinless chicken breasts in a medium skillet or saucepan and add lightly salted water to cover; bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat to low and simmer gently until chicken is cooked through and no longer pink in the middle, 10 to 12 minutes.
